Pigott or Anderson in SHEFFIELD
« on: Saturday 31 October 09 05:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I've been trying to work out a bit of a confusing case in my tree of a Samuel Pigott born around 1837 in Sheffield.

I was having a lot of trouble finding him for some years in the census, but eventually found out that he had called himself Samuel Anderson in 1861 and 1871, and then had reverted to being Samuel Pigott in 1881, 1891 & 1901.

Some of his children also used the name Anderson or Henderson as a surname or had the name Anderson or Henderson as their middle name.

I got a copy of Samuel's marriage certificate and he is named as Pigott, but his father is named as William Anderson, a cutler.

This Anderson name has thrown a bit of a spanner in the works, becuase I thought Samuel's parents were Samuel and Ann Pigott, who I had him living with in the 1841 and 1851 census, and had found a baptism for in 1837 in Sheffield Parish Church.

I've been trying to find William Anderson/Henderson, or a baptism for Samuel as either Pigott or Anderson/Henderson, or any marriages between Pigott's and Anderson/Hendersons on Ancestry, IGI, sheffieldindexers.com and every web site I can think of but have had no luck. They don't seem to have the parish records for the right time period available.

So, here are my questions:

1. Are there any baptisms in Sheffield around 1837 for a Samuel Pigott? (APART FROM the one I have already found which is at Sheffield Parish Church, May 7 1837, parents Ann & Samuel)

2. Are there any baptisms in Sheffield around 1837 for a Samuel Anderson or Henderson? (With a father called William)

3. Are there any marriages in Sheffield at any time between a Pigott and an Anderson or Henderson?

4. Do you have any other ideas, explanations, advice about this? Because I am stumped!  ???

Thanks a million for any help and advice,
Cate

hi Cate - Samuel Pigott is my 3rd Great Grandfather and I too am stumped by the confusion . I tried to follow if his wife had any Anderson/Henderson connection but cant find that either .
On the marriage certificate (which I would love a copy of if you could ?) did he marry Ann Wilson or Ann Birley ??
Annie Eliza Pigott married my maternal Great Grandfather Harry Bertram in 1912

regards Diane Neal (nee palmer)

Hi Diane, thanks for your message. Samuel married Ann Wilson in 1857, I can't see how to attach a copy of the certificate in this message, so I'll send you a private message.

I haven't found out much more info about the Pigotts/Henderson connection, it's difficult because of the lack of transcriptions for sheffield parish registers.

I did find Samuel listed in the 1841 census as Samuel Henderson at Allen St, age 4 living with James Henderson, 35, pen knife manufacturer and Mary Henderson, 35.

In the 1851 census he is at Hammond St, as Samuel Henderson age 14, son, spring knife cutler born sheffield, with James Henderson, head, 44, spring knife cutler, born sheffield and Mary Henderson, wife, 46, born dover, kent.

This James Henderson who seems to be Samuels father in 1841 & 1851 is living with Samuel & Ann Anderson at 20 West John St in the 1861 census, and is living near them at 140 solly st in 1871 while Samuel & Ann are at 124 solly st.  Although it's strange that on Samuels marriage certificate it says his father is William Henderson, so I don't know how James links in?

James Henderson was buried 26 may 1875 age 68 at sheffield st mary. Mary Henderson was buried 30 sep 1860 age 52 sheffield st mary.

Wish I could find a birth record for Samuel Anderson/Henderson/Pigott, it's unlucky he was born just before registration started in 1837!

Best wishes,
Cate

All I can suggest is look in the Quarter sessions records 1834 to 1838 for a bastardy order on William Anderson for payment to a spinster woman called Pigott (Pigot, Piggot or Piggott) paid through the overseer of a Sheffield, Attercliffe, Rotherham or Bradfield and Ecclesfield parish's

Sometimes Illegitimate births were recorded in Workhouse records or  baptised years later after an illegitimate birth. These records will be in Sheffield, Rotherham or Barnsley Archives
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Thanks very much dobfarm, that's a great idea, I'd forgotten about bastardy orders. I'll have to try and have a visit to Sheffield archives soon.

Hi Cate

I have pretty much the same as you -

Pigott, Samuel (of Sheffield, born 1837-04-14). Baptised May 7, 1837, by E Goodwin at Sheffield Parish Church, Church Street, Sheffield. Parents name(s) are Ann & Samuel (Joiner).

1841 Census I have Samuel & Ann , George,Harriett, Mary Elizabeth, Samuel Ann & Stephen at Allen st /Morpeth street

1851 Samuel Ann Mary Elilzabeth Samuel Ann & Charles at 28 Ct, 9 Granville Street

1861 Samuel Ann John James & Margaret all listed as Andersons at 20 WestJohn Street then on the next page is James Henderson at 20 West John Street

1871 Sam, Ann, John,Margaret Mary Herbert & ALice at 124 Solly Street - again as Andersons

1881 Samuel, Ann Margaret Mary Eliz,Herbert,Alice Jospeh & Frederick at 150 Solly Street as Pigotts

1891 Samauel & Fred at 150 Solly Street as Pigotts

1901 Samuel Frederick Martha & Martha Pigott at 150 Solly Street
Death 1902 - The inscription on the headstone is Pigott too - cant insert it on here sadly

It seems that they adopted the Anderson surname and Henderson middle name for the children following his marriage to Ann Wilson. Maybe he found out that at that time that Samuel Pigott wasnt really his father or they had a fall out or something or maybe James Henderson was simply a border who signed their marriage certificate for some reaosn ?
I didnt get the pic of the marriage certificate but if you could send it outside of this website to di.neal1@btinternet.com that would be great and I will send you pics I have of all the Pigotts headstones .

maybe between the 2 of us we can crack this mystery !  :)    Di x
