WILLIAMS, STILE, MOON, HAWKIN of Calstock
« on: Friday 30 October 09 11:45 GMT (UK) »
I have been helping a Spanish descendant of the WILLIAMS, STILE, MOON, HAWKIN families of Calstock, so if anyone is researching these surnames please add your interest here.

William WILLIAMS married Lydia MALACHI or MALACHY on 19 May 1829 at Maker CON.
They had two daughters:
Susan WILLIAMS chr 25 Jul 1830 and Lydia WILLIAMS chr 21 May 1832, both in Calstock, but the mother died and buried on 21 May 1832 in Calstock at the age of 28.

William WILLIAMS married Louisa MOON on 3 May 1836 at East Stonehouse DEV.
They had eight children:
William Henry WILLIAMS chr 21 May 1837, James WILLIAMS chr 21 Oct 1838, Caroline WILLIAMS chr 16 Feb 1840, Louisa E. WILLIAMS, Charles John WILLIAMS chr 9 Jan 1842, Alfred William WILLIAMS b 1856, Theodore Albert WILLIAMS chr Jan 1858 and Minnie Louisa WILLIAMS b 1870

James WILLIAMS married Mary Louisa STILE on 14 Jul 1864 in Stoke Damerel DEV and they emigrated to Tharsis, Huelva, Andlucia, Spain where they are buried.

Hi
You do know that the biggest house in Calstock (town rather than parish) is called Tharsis after the spanish mine?   You don't mention how the Hawkin family fit into the research you're after.  It sounds to me as if they weren't in the parish for very long, so there probably isn't much in the Calstock record to help you.
Parr family Crediton Devon
Goodman family India & Dorset
Haws family Essex
Hill family Wales and Essex
Lancaster family India
Harrison family Yorkshire
Penny family Essex possibly Bournemouth

Hi  ?

John STILE was both a bargeman and a cooper so travelled by water and probably met Elizabeth Hawkin somewhere along the waterway away from Calstock, but here is their marriage from the Stoke Damerel DEV PRs:

In Stoke Damerel DEV on 27th June 1839, John Stile, of full age, bachelor, occupation - cooper,  of 8 Cornwall Street, son of William Stile, mariner and Elizabeth Hawkin, of full age, spinster of 8 Cornwall Street, daughter of Michael Hawkin, mason.
Witnesses: J Symons (churchwarden) and Grace Algar.

From Calstock CON PRs:

John STILES chr 2 Oct 1814 Calstock s/o William (bargeman) y Elizabeth

John STILE aged 73 years, resident of Harrowbarrow Terrace Calstock was buried 15 Apr 1888 in Calstock CON

They lived in Calstock all their lives and appear in all of the censuses of 1841 through to 1881.

On 14 Jul 1864 Mary Louisa STILE, one of their daughters, married James WILLIAMS, a miner, in Stoke Damerel DEV.  They emigrated to Tharisis in southern Spain where James and many others from Cornwall mined copper.

I know about the house called Tharsis, recently on the market having been fully refurbished, if you have a few million.  It was built for a mining engineer who made his fortune in Tharsis Spain.

Hope that answers your question, but I know little else about the Hawkin family.

If you speak Spanish I can put you in touch with a Spanish descendant of James & MAry Louisa.

Mary Louisa STILE was born in Calstock in July or August of 1840 because the census of 1841 shows Mary STILE is 11 months old.  Her father John STILE did not register her birth because it was not required by law, although the marriage of John STILE and Elizabeth HAWKIN was registered in 1839 because the law so required.

Although her father John STILE was baptised 2 Oct 1814 in Calstock, it appears that John and Elizabeth STILE did not have their children baptized, because one of his daughters was baptized many years after her birth:
Hannah STILE was born on 27 May 1851 in Callington, and was baptized on 8 March 1872 in Calstock, daughter of John STILES, cooper, and Elizabeth Harrowbarrow residence.
It appears that Hannah decided to be baptized because her parents had not taken her to be baptized soon after birth.

I have not been able to find the baptism of Mary Louisa STILE born in Calstock in July/Aug 1840 and it is odd that she was not baptised before her marriage to James Williams in Stoke Damerel on 14 Jul 1864.  I would have expected the vicar to ask her to be baptised before the marriage.

The OPC for Calstock suggested the baptisms were likely to be in the Three Towns (Plymouth) but Devon Record Office have looked only at the baptisms in the Stoke Damerel PRs and suggested looking at non-conformist registers and of parishes which neighbour Calstock on the Cornish side, such as Callington, Stoke Climsland, South Hill and St. Dominic.

These are the census returns of the Stile family:

I am quite sure that the Calstock OPC has done a good job in transcribing baptism records and only one for a child of John and Elizabeth STILE is found.  If you find any others let me know.

Thanks.

Hi
I saw your note on William Williams from Maker. Is this Maker Rame/St Germans. My Tree is from Cawsands in Maker.I have a William born 1813 , so not your person. But the Williams's of Cawsands are possibly the same lot and they always use Mothers maiden names somewhere in the list of second names in the boys christian names. You probably have looked up the online records for Maker ? they may help if use this formula !

Only the first marriage of William Williams was in Maker CON although it is unlikely he lived there for any period of time:

William Williams, bachelor, minor, sojourner, of this parish, married Lydia Malachi, spinster, sojourner, of this parish by banns on 19 May 1829. Married by Thomas Hunt Ley, Curate. The groom made his mark while the bride signed her name as Lydia Malachy. The witnesses were James

I cannot say if these Williams are related to yours.  Calstock was once unofficially called Williamstown as a Williams bought several mines and employed family to mine them.

Hi Nick
I looked at my notes and can see there may be a William son of James may Williams & Mary Tallack born 1803, But I assumed died prior to 1813, due to another son called William in 1813. This later son is called William Stibbs WILLIAMS after his relative William STIBBS who died at sea a few years before1813.
I'm not up on these things but why is your William a Minor ?
I live in Calstock, and i had a holidaymaker ask after his relatives called ( ? )  who ran the bootmakers at what is now the Boot Inn, any link to your Moons ? I could look it up if it helps!

William Williams appears to have had no middle name and it is likely that minor was written in the marriage register instead of miner - that is the transcription I received from Cornwall Record Office.  I cannot tell you any more than is in my earlier post.

I am not related to any of these families and researched them for a Spanish descendant of James Williams and Mary Louisa Stile.  James emigrated to mine copper in Spain.  I am a descendant of John Crossman born in 1846 in Tavistock who lived in Calstock in the 1860s/70s before emigrating to Spain:

1871 Census of dis 15 Calstock CON taken on 2 April 1871 Harewood Road:   John CROSSMAN head mar age 24 M tin miner b. Tavistock DEV  Emma CROSSMAN wife mar age 24 F b. Devonport DEV  William J CROSSMAN son age 3 M b. Calstock CON  Eddy J CROSSMAN son age 1 M b. Calstock CON and next door but one at Okel Tor 2:
