Longbottom of Brighouse
« on: Thursday 29 October 09 17:32 GMT (UK) »
I have information on several members of the Longbottom family in Brighouse and district.  I have now come across John Edward Longbottom who was Manager of the branch of the Halifax & Huddersfield Union Banking Company at 1 King Street, Brighouse in 1897.

Is anyone researching their Longbottom family and can place John Edward in context, possibly even connecting him with the Longbottom who built the 5 Rise Locks on the Leeds/Liverpool Canal [another question posed by a visitor to the Calderdale Companion website]?

Any help would be appreciated

HI Malcolm

I've found your man in the 1891 census which in turn helped me find him with his parents in the 1871 census

So this is the 1891 census living in Hudds

John E Longbotom bn circa 1864 Notts Occ Bank Cashier
Isabel Longbottom bn circa 1867 Hudds
Charlotte Longbottom circa 1867 Guernsey - sister
Lizzie Longbottom circa 1869 Manchester - sister

1901 census J E Longbottom is in Rastrick now noted as a Bank Manager living at 174  Thornhill Rd/Castle Flds

so in turn this is the 1871 taken in Batley

William Longbottom Minister of Methodist/New Connextions zion Chapel Batley  bn circa 1834 Barkisland
Charlotte Longbottom 1835 Yorks
John Edward Longbottom 1863 Notts
Alfred Longbottom 1864 St Peter Port Guernsey
Charlotte Longbottom 1867   """"""
Lizzie Longbottom circa 1869 Manchester

Hope this helps a little for you.

Wendy

you've probably moved on from your 2009 conversation! But I think there is a family member on Ancestry.com who has quite an interest in the Brighouse Longbottom lineage. But I don't have any answers on your immediate question regarding the other Longbottom connections.
I've only got scanty immediate info as John Edward Longbottom was my grandfather, altho' I never met him. He died in 1928 I think.
He moved from Brighouse to Bridlington (due to a heart or lung condition? that it was thought would benefit from the sea air). He established what is now Lloyds bank there.
He married twice. First wife died. Had x? children, one of whom married an Eileen ? whose 3 children were Myrtle, Janet and David Longbottom. They lived in Streatham, south London before moving finally to West Worthing. I think the daughter of David Longbottom, Jane, has done some research into the family history. My father, Brian, kept a very close friendship with Myrtle.
John Longbottom's second marriage was to Frances Mabel Cochrane (or Mabel Frances?) who was much younger than him (actually was his daughter's best friend). John and Mabel had 2 boys: Brian Cochrane Longbottom (1918 - 1996) and Philip John Longbottom (1919? - 2010?)

My first school girlfriend was called Angela Longbottom when we were about 14, she came from Huddersfield - Maybe one of your relo -
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth
