BDM Victoria
« on: Thursday 29 October 09 07:15 GMT (UK) »
Folks,
I have a long list of relatives born in Victoria since 1857 and can not afford to buy each certificate to confirm my findings.Do BDM have a facility that will show date and location etc, even a pay per view?
I am returning for a few days next month from Perth with the intent of spending time there and at PROV.
Thanks,
Eric

Hi Eric

There are alot of peeps on here who have the Vic BMD's indexes( myself included) who would be very happy to do some lookups for you. From memory birth entries listed parents/district/no date - just year/reg no's etc.

Though I have purchased loads of certs just to find another lead on that particular line, which I was stuck on.

Feel free to post away when you are ready.

Thanks for your kind offer but the three Reeves boys each had many children by 1870 and the breeding didn't slow for many a year,so the number is huge.I already have years for most, just hoping to fill some of the gaps.
Trood,i too am chasing family from Westmorland however the ones capturing my time now are those who stayed in Windermere and will send me digging in archives boxes when next in UK.

Hi all. This is a hint to a lot of Victorians having to purchase certificates. There is a site called Certificate Sharing which is a free site where you can upload and download photos, certificates etc.

Also, if you know the year they died look up some of the most popular cemetery records like Fawkner which includes a couple of others and Springvale which is free to look up. They will give you dates of birth and dates of deaths in most cases. You can also freely ring them and they will give you information on the phone. They are both great cemeteries to research. Geelong is another one free to look up.
Hope this helps.

Warcoort there is a facility
http://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/index-search?action=getHistIdxSearchCriteria

However many of us will help if you have specific years and locations in your gaps.  I can understand your reluctance to request help if the number is huge....but try us ;D

Winalope there are many links to resources at the top of the board  -
Australian Resources and then each state is listed individually.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,399.0.html

Perhaps have a browse through the Victorian resources which may include some of the sites you mention.  The cemeteries you mention would be under the url for Australian Cemeteries and are well used resources.

Perhaps you may like to add the url for Certificate Sharing if is it isn't there already.  There is a link to AusBDM Exchange.  Good to have links to free sites.

Cheers

 Folks,
I have year and place for most people, sadly it is the detail that is missing! Have just signed up with certificate exchange as i have a few certificates that were dead ends;and ausbdm.org may have leads too.
Thanks all,
Eric

Hi warcoort,
I find this site great, its the Will index upto 1925 for Victoria. You can download Wills/Probates for free. Its very busy at the moment, but you can try again later.

Hi all, I have a real problem about having to pay to view search results on the Victorian BMD site - does anyone know why they charge a fee when NSW, QLD, WA, don't charge? Plus the transcriptions are awful- I can't begin to count how many 99c I've wasted.
Wouldn't it be great to have a site like UK FreeBMD - would that be 'allowed' here in Victoria?- Jan
