Help with a birth record
« on: Thursday 29 October 09 04:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi there, I would greatly appreciate any help in deciphering this document. It has some great information on it like the Father's occupation , but I can not make out what it is. It also mentions Mary Lauder Purve's Grandfather, but again can not read what it is.

Thank you very much !!

Hi

I think that Father's occupation might be Tramway Car Driver.....then it says domicile 3 South Elliott Street I think

Grandfather looks like it might be Andrew LAUDER. Chapel Dun Present

Hi Jeff  :)

I changed your document to a JPG file so we can see it on the message instead of having to download it to view...also cropped just a section of it, as we are only allowed to post sections of certificates etc. for deciphering, rather than full certs which would be a breach of copyright.

Having said all that, I'll now go and have a look at it and see what it says!!  ;D ;D

Cheers
Prue

WOW,

thank you so much both of you for trying and replying so fast!! I wish I found this site from the begining of this journey. I will remember about the posting rules too.

I have searched for Trammery Driver as an expression, but nothing came up. But that is what I thought it said too. Same for Andrew . I am assuming Chappel Dun is a Parish.

In this other document it lists John Purves as such.

Again, thank you very much for the help!

Where is the clip from that you've just posted?
It states that John Purves is a Carter.

Stick with Rootschat - it's a great site with lots of willing helpers!  :D

P.S.  Now that I've looked again, there might be a comma between "Chapel" and "Duns" in the address of the grandfather.  The other references to the same place are the marriage place for the parents, and the bit at the end of the entry that states "Parish of Birth Duns".

I'm not familiar with this area of Scotland, but I did find this information about the Parish of Duns - hopefully it's helpful:
