Eugene or Owen - Are they interchangeable
« on: Tuesday 27 October 09 20:50 GMT (UK) »
I have recently found that relatives from Ireland who were reistered as Owen (first name), seem to switch back and forth from Owen to Eugene. In some census' they refer to themselves as Owen, in others Eugene. The same thing goes for their male children. Is this something common or is it a quirk of my genealogical family. Can anyone help?

Thanks,

gord

Quite common in Ireland to use both Eugene and Owen. Scroll down to Eoghan in this list-

Have found that in each certificate that I have for an Owen or Eugene from Ireland that the name is constantly interchangeable. This has particularly happened in my family when both  the father and son were called Owen.

Thanks Jericho, in my family I have at least three generations of Owens/Eugenes, who kept naming the first male son, and in one case a daughter (Eugena), Owen, then switching to Eugene after a few years. it seemed very confusing.
