Comries of Newtown Street Kilsyth.
« on: Tuesday 27 October 09 18:12 GMT (UK) »
Evening.   I am researching my grandfathers life and looking at the period he lived  at 40,Newtown Street, Kilsyth.  As I have never visited Kilsyth , can anyone tell me if Newtown Street still exists in the form it was in at  the end of the last century??   My granddad was James Comrie,     1878-1927.   He had the following siblings. Peter 1876-79.    Daniel 1887-1936.      John   1885-1923.   David 1883-1957.
Jean Stirling 1882-1900    .Elizabeth   1880-?.    Margaret 1889-  ?    Christine 1893.-?  I know James came down to England (West Cumbria) in 1912.
I am really desperate to find out more about David and John Comrie and if their offspring are still living in Scotland. I have established that one of Johns  sons ,  William Orr Comrie ,was killed in Tunisia in the 2nd World War in 1943. Any further info on the rest of the family and the lineage down to myself would be very welcome.      Best wishes.    picamarra.

Hello Anderson. Yes indeed, James b.1878,my grandfather, firstly married Helen Clelland in 1902 in Kilsyth. Poor Helen died in childbirth in 1905 aged 23. James came down to Cumberland  during  the first decade of the 20th century. He married Isabella Smith and was a miner. He died in 1927. With the help of my sister"JuBed" and long lostcousins in Oz ,   I have been able to research the Comrie line back to the 18th century. (See other posts regarding the Comries of Muthill.)   Best wishes.  picamarra.

Hi picamarra
Then we are related. Our lines look they connect from Peter Comrie who married Margaret McInnes. I have them with 3 children - Peter born abt 1826, Margaret born  abt 1830 & Daniel born 16 Feb 1832.
My line is from daughter Margaret who married Alexander Rankin.

Hi
Have just noticed that someone on the Lanarkshire noticeboard is also researching Comries of Kilsyth - you might like to have a look and see if there is any connection with your Comries.

Newtown Street still exists in Kilsyth today. It is where the Scotdisc premises are. That is the place where they have a recording studio and sell various dvd's etc of Scottish singing stars. And also those picture postcard type cd's that you can send to people. They are made on the premises too.
