Agnes PAXTON b. abt 1845 Norham - censuses pls!
« on: Monday 26 October 09 01:22 GMT (UK) »
Hello Rootschatters! I recently found a rellie mentioned on a tombstone in Norham Cemetery: < Agnes, wife of the late Henry Weatherill of Stockton-on-Tees, daughter of the late John Paxton of Norham died 26 December 1912 age 67. Also the above Henry Weatherill died 11 June 1897 age 53.>  The problem is that I found Agnes and Henry in 1881 LDS version of 1881 census (RG11 4843/41 page 21)....I fear it is badly transcribed as it states that Henry Weatherill was b in Stokesley, York..... Can anyone please find this family in 1891 and 1901??  Also, a wonderful bonus would be finding Agnes Paxton with her Father John Paxton as a child in 1851 and 1861 as I don't know her Mother's name nor do I know if she had any siblings.   Thank you kindly for reading my tale of woe.  :'(   Pat

Hello Pauline, Thank you for the look ups...sadly, I don't think John Paxton, the doctor is my family....I suspect my John Paxton would have been either a farmer or innkeeper.  But, I am staying flexible on that one. Thank you for finding the Weatherill family -- yes, I am certain that is the one I seek.   Pat

 Pat,

I like a flutter on the geegees, without much success. But I wish I could get a bet on that the Paxton family found is yours-- doctor or not.

 Clues abound.

The Agnes Paxton on censuses 1851, 61 and 1871 in Norham with Dr dad John.  Then she disappears- as a Paxton.

"Your" Agnes Paxton's marriage registration to Henry Weatherill in Jume Qtr in 1875 with/at Berwick Reg District ( BMD for Norham lay with Berwick juridiction.

Pauline's Agnes had mother Margaret. Your Agnes called her first dtr Margaret.

Pauline's Agnes had a sister called Rosalie. Your Agnes called a Dtr Rosalie
( but recorded and/or transcribed as Nosalie.

If you have Agnes/Henry marriage cert, what was her father's profession.

I notice Henry was an Architect- so Doctor's dtr was a good match ( It was Henry's father that was innkeeper/farmer.

(Although Stockton was in County Durham and Stokesley was in the North Riding of Yorkshire... they were only a few miles apart )

Hello Michael, Yes, I agree that the Agnes Paxton whose MI I found turns out to be the daughter of a doctor who married an architect........sadly, while I do have some Agnes' in my tree, they are the folks who owned and operated an inn at Velvet Hall in Norham...and that generation also included some who lived at Velvet Hall but were farmers. (William and John Paxton, Brothers to my Harriet Paxton.)  I am totally flummoxed by this family because #1 I can't be sure I have all the siblings AND #2 I can't determine where the forename Harriet came from! (excuse the poor grammar.....) Fortunately, my Harriet is easily spotted in the IGI but NOT all her siblings...  Thank you for your interest! Pat

Pat, I can cope with your grammar, but you have flummoxed me with the introduction of a Harriet Paxton ! So were you not seeking Agnes Paxton ?

Hello Michael,  Ah yes.....Harriet Paxton (who also goes missing after 1841 census in Roxburghshire with her husband James Best) is my direct line, but I had been verbally told that she possibly had a sister named Agnes....Her other siblings, verified by appearing with her daughter, Margaret Ann Scott, in 1841 census are Isabella Paxton, William Paxton and John Paxton.  Also, from Berwick-on-Tweed register, they all had a Brother, Selby Paxton, born in 1790......Lots of gaps in this family's children so that's why I gave credence to the oral information that there was also a sister named Agnes Paxton in the mix!  ::)  Thanks, as always, for your interest AND input, Michael.  I hope my ramblings haven't confused you.  Pat

A snippet of info, that might help - or hinder.

The Parson & White Trade Directory of 1827 includes a page on business etc within Norham Parish.

Longridge and Horncliff(e) were two of the eleven "townships" that comprised
Norham Parish

James Paxton Gentleman, Horncliff
Inns. Longridge Robert Paxton Ord Arms Velvet Hall
Inns Horncastle William Paxton The Salmon.

No Paxton farmers listed for Norham Parish area.

Armstrong's Map of 1769 and Fryer's of 1820, show Horncliff, Longridge and Velvet Hall.

(Source- on line. Northumberland Communities site.  communities.northumberland.gov.uk
Trade Directory within "Cornhill" community, under "Printed Material" section

Maps within "Berwick" or "Cornhill" communities, under " Plans" sections. )

One of the Paxtons of Horncliff, like the Scottish doctor Paxton, also had a dtr called Agnes in 1840s.

Trivia Angle
Velvet Hall had it's own railway station as early as 1849. On the Tweedmouth><Kelso line. Velvet Hall st closed 1955.
