WW11 firemen greater london
« on: Sunday 25 October 09 20:19 GMT (UK) »
Have tried to find out where any service info on wartime firemen is kept.  Maybe it was destroyed or perhaps they didn't have time to keep any!!  Has anyone had any success on this subject please.

Hi trenance and welcome to rootschat.

Maybe if you put your request on the London & Middlesex Board of rootschat someone there may be able to give you help. Below is the link to that Board.

Hi Trenance

My Grandad was an Auxillery Fireman in  London during WW2. I contacted the London Fire Brigade Museum who were able to send a little detail about his service. You do not receive much, just details like name,  training dates, where stationed and also which grade of fireman. Due to the sheer number of fireman that were recruited they were unable to keep more informative records, however this may be different if your ancestor was a regular.

I havent visited the museum as it is by appointment only but the lady I contacted was most helpful. I will dig out the letter I received and get back to you.

Hi Steve,
thanks very much for the reply.  Sorry not to get back to you sooner, I've been away.

I don't know if my grandad was a regular or not, perhaps my mum would know.

My uncle tried to find info on the internet without any luck.  Perhaps like you say they had to take on so many at the time.

If your grandad was a full-time fireman, you can get a copy of his service record from the LFB.

Try emailing museum[at]london-fire.gov.uk

Hi Angie

Just dug out my folder. I was in contact with the records officer, Kelly Fox, who was able to send records on my grandfather. Apparently over 40,000 people were employed by LFB during the war and that is why information that can be provided is a little sparse.

You can email museum[at]london-fire.gov.uk or telephone 020 7587 2894

Hope this helps and do let us know of how you get on

Steve

Yes, Kelly was the lady who dealt with my enquiry when I wanted my father's WW2 LFB records (he was actually in the LFB for 22 years).  Unfortunately, at the time I applied, all the records were being moved, and I had to wait until they had relocated them.  It was worth the wait, though.
