My great-grandmother was a CATHERINE AGNES MCNULTY, born to ANTHONY P. MCNULTY in Kingston, Ulster Co., NY, in 1883. Anthony was from Co. Sligo [he was born about 1853 and came to the US in 1869 or 1870]. I understand from another researcher in the family tree that Anthony's parents were Owen McNulty and Mary McLoughlin--he believes they came to the US, but I do not know if this is true as I cannot find graves.
Catherine had two older sisters I know of from the 1880 census: Margaret was born in about 1877 and Mary in 1880, both in NY. Both sisters were dead by the 1900 census. Their mother was Bridget McDonald/McDonell, and she died in 1887. I believe she came from Sligo as well. Through Anthony's second marriage, Catherine had younger siblings named Rose, Nellie, Mary/May, and Michael, all born in Kingston.
Many of Anthony's maternal aunts and uncles were in Kingston by the 1880 census, some as early as the 1860 census.
I have always assumed the family could have moved between Scranton, PA, and the Kingston area due to the canal connection between the two areas. Maybe Mass. was a first stop, though.
I wonder if our Anthonys could be cousins--the name similarities are astonishing.
