McNulty in Aclare (Culdaly)
« on: Wednesday 09 March 05 08:42 GMT (UK) »
My grandmother, Catherine Agnes McNULTY was born Dec 29. 1890, in Aclare (Culdaly), County Sligo to Anthony McNulty and Winnie ROACH.  My grandmother's mother passed shortly after Catherine's birth.  Two, or three older sisters of Catherine's were sent to an orphanage or convent to be raised.  Anthony did marry again (unkonwn as to who) and had more children.
I believe there was brother's/half brother's named Martin and Anthony.  Possibly a Michael.  I know there were full sisters Bessie, Winnie, and Annie (all who immmarried to Woburn Massachusetts in the late 1800's early 1900's).  There were other brother's and sister's but I don't know how many or names.
I understand two (or three) of Martin McNulty's daugthers immigrated to Boston in the 1920's to earn funds to return to Co Sligo to purchase a farm (or individual farms).
Anyone have information on this family?

Hi Kanddad

You could try getting in touch with the Sligo Heritage Centre, you never know they may be able to offer you some advice as to where to look.

IGI lists 3 sons to Anthony McNulty & Winey Roach:
1. Martin born 2 May 1875 Co. Sligo
2. Michael born 2 May 1877 Co. Sligo
3. Pat born 24 Aug.1878 Culdalee. Co. Sligo

Winnie & Bessie McNulty listed Boston Passenger Lists (bet.1920-1940) on Ancestry.

www.findmypast:
Winifred McNulty age 22 Liverpool to Boston in 1922.
Bessie McNulty age 27 Liverpool to Boston in 1926.
Lots of entries when searching for Annie McNulty.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

My great-grandmother was a CATHERINE AGNES MCNULTY, born to ANTHONY P. MCNULTY in Kingston, Ulster Co., NY, in 1883. Anthony was from Co. Sligo [he was born about 1853 and came to the US in 1869 or 1870]. I understand from another researcher in the family tree that Anthony's parents were Owen McNulty and Mary McLoughlin--he believes they came to the US, but I do not know if this is true as I cannot find graves.

Catherine had two older sisters I know of from the 1880 census: Margaret was born in about 1877 and Mary in 1880, both in NY. Both sisters were dead by the 1900 census. Their mother was Bridget McDonald/McDonell, and she died in 1887. I believe she came from Sligo as well. Through Anthony's second marriage, Catherine had younger siblings named Rose, Nellie, Mary/May, and Michael, all born in Kingston.

Many of Anthony's maternal aunts and uncles were in Kingston by the 1880 census, some as early as the 1860 census.

I have always assumed the family could have moved between Scranton, PA, and the Kingston area due to the canal connection between the two areas. Maybe Mass. was a first stop, though.

I wonder if our Anthonys could be cousins--the name similarities are astonishing.

I have had lots of luck using http://ifhf.brsgenealogy.com/index.php lately: they index Ireland births, marriages and deaths online that you can search for free: once you find a listing that you'd like full details for, it costs about US $6. I looked for W Roach marriages +/- 4 years around 1874 [I took this lead from the 1875 birth date of the eldest child listed here in Oct 2007]--there are what look like just two marriages, both in in Co. Mayo [just east of Sligo], for women with the first initial W: Winifred shows up with varied spellings; one took place in 1869 and the other in 1874. I then checked for Anthony McNulty marriages +/- 4 years around 1874 and did come up with one in Co. Mayo in 1874. That might be your match. If you pay for the records, you can get a parish, townland, and specific date of sacrament; most will also include witnesses' names and some include names of the bride and groom's parents. You can also search for the children's baptism records by father's forename...

Best wishes,

Cathy

Yeah, hi, I guess you are my cousin! My grandmother was Annie McNulty, daughter of Anthony McNulty and Winifred Roche (or Roach - I've seen both spellings) of Culdaly ( or Culdalee - have seen it both ways) Aclare, Co. Sligo. She immigrated to MA about 1910 (according to a census record I found), I think with Winnie, and then I think Bessie and your grandmother (Catherine) came over later.  My grandmother was one of the two sisters sent to the orphanage (at a nearby convent) after Catherine was born - she used to tell us stories about the nuns in the orphanage and when my parents visited Ireland about 25 or 30 years ago, they still had records on my grandmother and her sister!  Anyway, Annie married Michael Kearns (originally from Tuam, near Galway, but they did not meet until both were in the US - the census record lists him as imigrating c. 1914) and they raised their family in Woburn, MA (4 daughters and 2 sons who survived to adulthood - my mother is one of their daughters; 2 other daughters died in childhood.) My mother always called your grandmother "Nana" O'Donnell, even tho she was her aunt, not her grandmother. I think I have more info on Bessie and Winnie's families somewhere on another computer but have to get it retrieved. I do know none of the sisters ever returned to Ireland except for one visit to see their father. My grandmother said they sailed back on the Mauretania (sister ship to the Lusitania) a couple days after the Titanic sank (1912) and that newsboys were on the pier hawking papers with headlines that the "Unsinkable Ship" had gone down as they were boarding their ship!
Didn't your grandmother (Catherine) have 14 kids or so?
Would love to hear more,
Jean R., New Jersey
