Mt Egerton rate books would be in Public Record Office in hard copy. Not sure if they would be in Ballarat. Ballarat and District Genealogical Society would be able to look this up for you but there is a charge. Of course there would be no charge if the books are not available or in Ballarat but at least this would eliminate that area. There may also be electoral rolls and directories for there.

Sorry only 2 Geaches in Ballarat and neither of them are Joseph or Ellen. Possible though they are buried in one of the smaller cemeteries and only registered in Ballarat, or possibly died in the local hospital.
Do you know what area they lived in?

I've run into a brick wall but it seems Jemima Bowman died at Ballarat. She was married to a bloke called Jonathon. Other family names I am looking for that seem to have been at one time in Ballarat are Curran and Scales. Rumour has it they were Roman Catholic. If you've seen any of them I'd love the details :)

There is also an Elizabeth Bowman, at Home, aged 37 buried same grave 21 Dec 1901.
they were  living at 10 Macathur Street, when they  died
Headstone reades
Jonathon BOWMAN 1832 - 1922 /his dear wife Jemima 1828-1906 / Thier beloved daughter/ Elizabeth 1864/1901
Private B is of no demonination so cannot see if thier religion.
There are a number of Currans buried at Ballarat and a few Scales.
Looking at the Pioneer Index it appears Jemima may have been married previously as there is a marriage for Jemima Scales to Jonathan and a child born to them but other to Jemima Pitt (her maiden name). on her death it has John Wembeldon Pitt as her father and Mary as her mother.  :) :)
What is it you are stuck on?

Ooh thanks :)

She was married previously to Joseph Scales - I got that from her daughter Annie's marriage entry. It's been a journey to get there since Annie married as a Scales but on *her* daughter's marriage certificate is Bowman. It was all cleared up when I saw Annie's marriage which lists Jemima Bowman, formerly Scales, as her mother. Never mind that Annie's three children have their mother's maiden name listed as Sclaes!

Interestingly they were living at the same address as when Annie got married.

I'm stuck because a) marriage certificates say born x place in Australia and yet no such record can be found in the bdm and b) it's the point where they all came form somewhere else. I'm waiting on certificates for people who moved into NSW to find out where they came from. I can't get images online like for the Victorian bdm. Still it'd be nice if I could figure out how Jemima and Jonathon got to Australia. They married here, but I can't work out where either of them came from. I may have to purchase another image.

Thanks so much for your help. :)

okay the 1851 census for Christ Church in Southwark England has Joseph Scales, a Journey Man Carpenter, (this means he had just finished his apprentiship and was in his first year as a qualified carpenter) I think his age is 27 and he was born in Whitechapel. His wife is Jemima aged 24 b southwark and daughter Anna aged 5, born London,
Interestingly enough next door is Mary Pitt, aged 56, a furniture Broker, Widow, b (I think) Minor Finsbury. also with her are Emma aged 17 b Christchurch and Adolphus aged 14 also b Christchurch.
In the 1841 census there is also Mary, and Alfred, (children) Mary aged 20, and Alfred 13, and her father John a broker.
So her father has died between 1841 and 1851 in St Saviour in Southwark.

The 1841 census for Joseph Scales has him the son of Edward a clerk and Mary with siblings Edward, 13 yrs Mary 11 yrs Alphonsus 9 yrs kate 7 William 4 and Carolyn mths. Oh and the name has been transcribed as Kales?

Joseph and Jemima m the first 1/4 of 1846 in Newington Surrey. and there is a death for Joseph Scales in 1854 in London Surrey.
