Inhabitants of Ballygibbon (Templeludigan, Wexford)
« on: Friday 23 October 09 22:41 BST (UK) »
Hi - I am in the process of researching ancestors who lived in Ballygibbon, Templeludigan, Co. Wexford, but because it is registered on Griffiths Valuation and the 1911 Census as a small townland, I'm not having much luck. The family in question is the O'Briens (James Sr., Eliza, Edward, Patrick, James, Timothy, Mary, Michael, Thomas, John, Margaret, Denis, Bridget, Kate, Aiden & later Lily) on the 1911 Census. The family had been in Ballygibbon for a long time and remained until the 1970s. Is there anyone here who is at all familiar with the area, or perhaps even lives there? The two things I'd really like to be able to somehow trace is whether the house & farm is still there (I've had no luck with the land registry) and also where the members of the family might be buried (all Roman Catholic). Does anyone know anything about Ballygibbon or the cemeteries near it/around Rathnure which is nearby?
Many thanks,
Tamsin

Hi
Just read through your posts and Aiden died 29th Oct !945 aged 35
As I said before it was a farming accident . He fell in to a threshing machine
I recall from my Aunt that she thought he was a very fine man
Regards mirann

Oh my goodness, I cannot believe this!
... Sorry if I seem over-excited but I have been dying to find out something more about Aidan :D thank you so much for your post :D Do you really have a prayer-card for him? He did die in 1945 in an accident with a threshing machine. Would you be able to perhaps email me the prayer card if I gave you my email address - it would mean the world to me. Thank you so very much for your message.

Dear Mirann,
Thank you very much, that would be very kind of you. My email address is (*) - the attachment should work fine on there. My mum and I are thrilled to be able to have this (Aiden was my mum's uncle, but died just before she was born) so this is a wonderful thing to get :) May I ask if your aunt ever mentioned anything else about him, or did she just mention him in passing - as I'm amazed that the prayer-card has survived since 1945!
Thank you once again very much for your kindness,
Tamsin

Lovely to see that you made a family connection.

With regard to your initial question, have you tried the OSI site to trace Templeludigan?

http://ims0.osiemaps.ie/website/publicviewer/main.aspx#V1,678596,635590,6

On this site you can switch between the historic and modern maps.

Hope this helps.

Dara.
