Looking for Norman M(a)cKinnon b. Inverness, Scotland
« on: Friday 23 October 09 22:23 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I'm looking for my great-grandfather, Norman MacKinnon (or McKinnon), apparently born in Inverness, Scotland (all I know!) in approx. 1856, and died in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia in approx. 1906.  I'm not sure when he emigrated to Australia, and the only other info I have is that he married (again, don't know when) a Margaret Nelson and had a son b. 1890 called Norman MacKinnon.
I hope someone can help!

Two possibilities at the moment - both born in Inverness (the county, rather than the town)

Norman McKinnon 15 Oct 1856 South Uist, parents Hector McKinnon & Peggy MacLeod
Norman McKinnon 15 Jul 1858 Harris, parents John McKinnon & Anne Campbell

You need to check these out at ScotlandsPeople since both are submitted entries on the IGI.

Hello,

I assume this is the Norman you are looking for.... As I recall you mentioning that your Great-Great-grandfather was named Hector.

Have you seen this article from the Argus Friday 1 October 1875? I don't know if it's the same man, but he was also from Invernessshire...

may be different man after all...

Ignore the links above.

Found him.

He did indeed die in 1906. Adelaide Advertiser has his funeral notice.

legwind,

I suspect the Norman you are looking for is the one born South Uist. I recall you mentioning a Hector MacKinnon in one of your other posts on this site.

Good luck all,

Kirsty,

That's definitely him, in the death notices.  Its amazing what people find!  How did you get onto that site?  Do I have to pay to do that search?
So now I've confirmed his date of death, what next?
Will a death certificate (if and where I can get one of them) contain info about his exact date of birth?
What about finding out when he came to Australia?  His wife was born in India I believe, and I've heard he may have visited there.  Perhaps he went there from Scotland, met her, and moved here?

And thanks iolair, I had found that record, the only problem I have is that I believe this Norman was born 9th Sept 1856.  Could the dates just be wrong?  And I only mentioned his father as being Hector as I had found this record.  :)

Hiya,

Given it is IGI, anything is possible. So it could just be the dates mixed up.

But other then that it looks like the right person.

Good luck  :)

You don't have to pay for the Newspaper site.

I have seen that you do have to pay for South Australia certificates and there is no online search currently. There are a couple of places that do transcriptions of documents.

Useful links here:

It looks like you were unlucky. Had he lived another year longer you would have got a lot more information on his death certificate.

There is a possible entry for Margaret Nelson, birth and christening in India on the IGI, 1860 to Joseph and Agnes Nelson.

For more info on India try here: http://www.fibis.org/
