Kirsty,

I found some good info on those S.A. sites.  Including a date they arrived in Adelaide!
They came over on the ship Devon (I don't now where it departed from) arriving in Port Adelaide on the 4th March 1880.  I also then found a record of him starting work with the Police on the 5th November 1880.  He was married then, and was married prior to departure (as his wife's name was also on the list I found).  This is where I found the info re the ship (GRG35/48 Records relating to official assisted immigration - Crown Lands and Immigration Office)

I haven't been able to find a passenger list for that ship however, and I don't know where it departed from, and who got on where.

I assume for any more info re: the police record, I probably have to visit the State Library?
Thanks for all the help, by the way.

I don't see a passenger list anywhere obvious either, however I have found newspaper entries on it's arrival. The Devon arrived on the 3rd April 1880 from London. It would appear there was a measles epidemic onboard.

The State Library and State Records look to be full of goodies for family history research, unfortunately you really need to be there in person to sift through it all by the looks of things.

edit: For details on things like the police records it might be worth posting a query on the Australia Board, you'll find quite a few folk there with a lot more knowledge about such matters than I have.  ;)

Kirsty,

Wow, thanks for that.  I've really got to learn how to search that newspapers site better... didn't think of looking for Devon!
And you misquoted the date slightly... it was in March.  And I'd say on the 2nd or 3rd March.  :)
I'll be in Adelaide for Xmas, so it looks like I'll have lots of documents to pick up, hopefully!

And yes, I'll try posting a question to the Australia forum, see if anyone there can tell me more about the Devon.

Thanks for all yours and everyones help too, by the way.

Oops! I think I had been staring at far too many newspaper pages from different dates by then!
That's why I always like to post the original source for info - then typos don't matter.

It's great that you can make it to Adelaide, so many people are not able to get to the archives in person, I hope you find what you are looking for.
