Fishers in Northern ireland
« on: Friday 23 October 09 12:27 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am trying to find details of Joseph Reuben Fisher, former editor of the Northern Whig, who was one of the three members of the Boundary Commission in 1925.  My own great great grandfather was a Joseph Reuben Fisher, but died in 1924 (buried in the Quaker Burial Ground, Balmoral).  I am trying to see if there is a link between my family and the other JR Fisher, as I have many Jospehs and Reubens in my ancestors. Iddo have my own family's direct line, but am missing possible links to other Fishers.
My Fisher line comes from Reuben and Joan Fisher, from London, whose family came to Youghal in about 1699, and whose son, Reuben Fisher (1699 - 1723) was my my Great X 7 grandfather.
Any help on trying to find information about the JR Fisher (Northern Whig) would be most welcome.

Many thanks,

Trevor Fisher

Hello , my grandmother, Eleanor Peet Fisher's family came to Youghal and with the line you mention. Her mother, Sarah Wright, married Abraham Fisher, whose brother was Reuben Fisher of the family coming to Youghal. The Wrights also came from England to Ireland about the same time as the Fishers. They became Quakers in Ireland. I do not believe they were of such in England.
My gr grandfather, the youngest sibling, left for South America with his family in the late 1800's. The family business in Youghal was to my knowledge on tender hooks.
He sent a telegram to his wife Sarah, not to bring the family to Argentina, as it was not a place for their many children...  Sarah never got the telegram and brought all their family to be with him at the British Colony, Argentina.
From there after some years they went to North Carolina, and thence to Pennsylvania, although not with Sarah, she had returned to Cork and died there.
My cousin Rebecca Fisher is trying to get in touch with you. ( Philadelphia) . She has all the family records in front of her at all times.  Margaret Brinton Collinson

Hello Trevor,
I am unsure if I can help you or not, but I too have a Joseph Reuben Fisher in my Tree, through marriage.  He was a member of the Friends Society (Quakers)and was born in Dublin I believe.  He married Miss Helen Dempster from Newry in Co Down circa 1872 and they had six children, about whom I know very little.  Helen died in 1925 in Belfast but I don't yet know when/where Joseph died.  If he connects with your Fishers at all, I should be very pleased to hear from you.

Regards.

Allena,
If you go to www.glenavyhistory.com and search through to "Clergy" and go down through the list you will find detail of one of your ancestors children.
