Just checked the burial records and there is a Richard Castle buried in South View cem on the 18th June 1873 aged 83, a labourer, of Basingstoke Common. He is in the same grave as George Castle who died aged 60 and was buried 16.2.1865, a plumber, living in the Union workhouse.

Hi Spanswick,
I am not sure what you have but in 1851 Census Hannah is with her Father Richard born c 1793, Basingstoke.
Her Sons Richard 1838 and Charles 1849 are down as Richards Grandsons
HO107/1681/173/38
Christenings, Basingstoke, Hampshire;
RICHARD Castle, 06 May 1838, Mother HANNAH
CHARLES JOHN Castle, 09 August 1849, Mother HANNAH
(Source Familysearch.Org)

1841 Census in Basingstoke we have;
Richard CASTLE, 45, Labourer
Charles, 10, Labourer
John, 13, Shoemakers Apprentice
HANNAH, 24
RICHARD, 3
All born in County
HO107/385/5/Basingstoke

Christenings Basingstoke, Hampshire to RICHARD/CATHERINE Castle and Variants of Surname;
MARY ANN, 21 Aug 1814
ANNA Castle, 25 Oct 1816***
HARRIET Castel, 26 Oct 1819
CHARLES Castel, 01 Aug 1822
RICHARD Castell, 16 Oct 1825
JOHN Castel, 08 June 1828
(Source Familysearch.Org)
***So ANNA is probably Hannah and Charles/John/Hannah and her Son Richard are at Home with Richard Castle Snr in the 1841 Census.
I cant find CHARLES c 1831's Christening.

This may be Richards Marriage;
Richard CASTLE
Katherine WILKINS
29 January 1814, Basingstoke, Hampshire
(Source IGI Extracted)

CATHERINE Castle was Buried 28 March 1837, Basingstoke
(F/S.Org)
So that is why she doesnt appear 1841 Census

Trish :)

EDIT;
ALFRED Castle c 1842 from 1851 census seems to be the Illeg Son of HARRIET c 1819;
CHARLES ALFRED Castle Christened 15 Aug 1841, Basingstoke,
Mother HARRIET Castle

Thank you for all those CASTLES - I suspect Richard b1793 might be the brother of my wife's Joseph, along with a Thomas, George and William. What I still haven't found is the baptisms of that generation, although they all say they were born Basingstoke.

It has, at least, reminded me that I need to keep looking for this family.

Thanks again,
John

Hi Trish,

Thank you - I wonder how I missed those?

George was with Joseph in 1851 and is described as his brother.

George was with Thomas in 1841 although it doesn't give the relationship.

William was with Thomas in 1851 and is described as brother.

It does look as though they are probably all children of John and Mary (or a second wife if Mary died between Thomas and Joseph's birth...).

Is there a gap in the records or is it likely that Joseph and George were baptized elsewhere?

Thanks,
John

That I am not sure of.
I have looked around on Hugh Wallis and searched Basingstoke records with no luck for the others christenings.

I did notice a John Castle, Residence Basingstoke, who Married 28 Feb 1808, Hunton, to a Mary King earlier on Anc.
This is also on FreeREG but doesnt say if he was a Widower.

I wonder if this could be your John?

Thank you Trish.

I did wonder about John and Mary in Nursling in 1841 - I discounted them as Mary would be too young to have married in 1788 and be the mother of a child in 1789. In 1851 she's 71 and living with the Luscombe family. But if she was John's second wife...

Thanks,
John
