Joseph and Lucy CASTLE
« on: Friday 23 October 09 09:23 BST (UK) »
Please could someone tell me where Joseph and Lucy CASTLE give as their place of birth in 1851/61. They were living in Basingstoke, I believe, and have a daughter Jane (baptised 1835) who is my wife's gggrandmother.

Many thanks,
John

Thank you very much for that - I had wondered whether he was the Joseph baptised in Alverstoke, but it seems not.

Thanks again for your help,
John

Hi John,
At least you have Brother George with him in 1851 census. Althought that has not helped me track down their Christenings!

Not sure if you have this;
Marriage
Joseph CASTLE
Lucy WOOLFORD
31 May 1834, Basingstoke, Hampshire, England

Possible Christening for Lucy;
Lucy WOOLFORD
10 December 1809, Wootton Saint Lawrence, Hampshire
Mother, ANN Woolford

All extracted records IGI at Familysearch

Hi Trish,

Many thanks for this.

Yes, I did wonder whether his brother would help to identify the right Joseph, but so far I haven't found their baptisms either.

I did find the marriage of Joseph and Lucy, thank you, and I noted the baptism of Lucy. Given how close Wootton St Lawrence seems to be on the map, it does seem credible that she would say she was born in Basingstoke, doesn't it? Joseph and Lucy did call their third daughter Ann, so that might also be a pointer. (And I can't imagine it's a very common name!)

Thanks again for your help,
John

Hello

Just came across your post. Actually the place they lived was Bunnian Place which is just by the station. The houses are all gone now but the road is still there.

If you go to www.hantsphere.org.uk and type in Bunnian Place you can see how it looked with the houses. Have just checked the nearby cemetery burial records and there was an Alfred Charles Castle who was buried there on 22.11 1897, a clerk aged 28 years who lived at 2 Bunnian Place. There are plenty of other Castles buried there but all lived elsewhere in the town.

Just checked the names of the ones I found buried in South View Cemetery against the names of the children of the marriage and discovered a burial of William Castle on 5th April 1918 a telegraph linesman aged 78 who was living in Soper Grove. He seems the right age to be the son of Joseph and Lucy.

Thank you for that - I had a look at the picture of the street where they were living.

William does look a possibility to be the son of Joseph and Lucy and brother of Jane, so thank you too for that.

Thanks again,
John

Edit: Just looked up William in 1881 and he was working as a Telegraph Wireman, so it looks even more likely that was his burial in 1918, thank you.
