Hyah, Mang. Hudson? Checking Bob Dawson's book, I see they were recorded in Derby and Cheshire, back in the late eighties. So, ye in the right stretch of the country, with Brum.

Patterson, he has, pretty much 'always and for ever', around Nottingham and Yorkshire.

Heinstein he doesn't mention.  I wouldn't like to hazard a guess about them. But, anyway, there's something to kick it off with. As is the way with this place, someone's bound to crop up sooner or later, able to provide some much closer to source information.

Incidentally; I know exactly what ye mean, about the older folk vehemently denying their own heritage. I suspect it's a product of the times they lived through  :(

Hello Mang.

Stevie G has pretty much filled you in, but for one point that may or not be relevant. In Europe, particularly in the Low countries, Romanies very often asume Jewish names.  One of the most famous examples is the Rosenberg family, who are jazz musicians in the Django mould.

Apparently, Gypsies recieve more racial abuse than Jews in those countries and it explains away the semetic/ Eastern appearance as well as rules and regs to do with food.  Not saying that this is the case with the Hienstiens.  you could say that's my theory of relativity. Boom! Boom! ;D

Sorry about that folks! i just couldn't help myself.   The imfo is true though.

I've been reading your posts and I have a connection to the Pattisons [Pattersons], also Ward family.  The Pattisons did originate in Scotland but moved through Northumberland, Durham, Yorkshire [some settled in Blackpool].  Let me know if I can help.
