Murrays & Fletchers of Canonbie
« on: Thursday 22 October 09 15:14 BST (UK) »
Hi
I have been researching the Scottish side of my family for quite a while now and it has taken me a lot of hard work to find my Neilson family in the Lanarkshire area, i would really appreciate any help in now finding information on my Murray/Fletcher family from Dumfriesshire.
So far i have been able to go as far back as 1801 when my gggggrandfather William Murray was born in the civil parish of Canonbie, his wife was Mary Murray (maiden name not known) who was born abt 1806 in England, they had at least seven children one of which was my ggggrandfather James Murray also from the Canonbie area, he married Elizabeth Murray( again maiden name not known) she was also from the Canonbie area, they had at least six children one of which was my gggrandfather William Murray and he again was born in Canonbie, he married Elizabeth Nicolas Fletcher who was the daughter of Thomas & Margaret Fletcher from the Canonbie/ Langholm areas, William & Elizabeth had i believe three daughters one of which was my ggrandmother Margaret or 'Maggie' Murray and she was born in 1886 and she married James Neilson from Lanarkshire  in 1904, they emigrated to Canada in 1906 where they had six children including my grandmother Margaret Neilson. In 1915 Maggie Neilson nee Murray died in Canada aged just 29yrs.

I know there are a lot of dates and names but any help would be really really appreciated .
Kind Regards

Some of this information fits your scenario, Maybe extended family.

1851 census on SP Canonbie
WILLIAM 53, MARY 48
AGNES 24, JAMES 17, GEORGE 14, ANN 12
WILLIAM 9, ISABELLA 6

The children’s names of William & Mary would suggest the following birth/baptisms,
however there are other possibilities you would need to check on SP.

If the age for William is incorrect on the census, this maybe his birth & Death:

Death:
WILLIAM MURRAY 76 mmn JOHNSTONE
1879 Canonbie

Birth/Baptism
WILLIAM MURRAY THOMAS MURRAY/MARY JOHNSTONE
15/12/1802 Canonbie
They had 9 children in Canonbie

Mary’s parents would likely be James & Agnes but no clear match.
