Hi Justin

Regarding the second marriage between Herman and Hannah, do you have any of the later children's birth certs for a maiden name?

Working from the 1871 census, there's a possible birth for Isaac:

Gaie,

Thanks for your interest.

However, the person I'm helping has been able to track the other five children including Isaac. It's only the four above that have disappeared.

Hello Justin,
I am the researcher looking for Louis Bauch/Baruch on jewishgen.  I have sent two emails to your gmail.

I believe Louis Bauch is Louis Baruch - nephew of the Sunderlands.

Would you have the maiden name of Herman Baruch's first wife Jane?

Regards,
Thorby

Hello Thorby,

Sorry that I had not responded to your emails. As it is well over a year since I have worked on this family, I had find my notes (that took long enough) and reacquaint myself with them.

The birth certificate of Morris Baruch, b. 1860 Manchester, identifies his parents as Hermann Baruch and Henrietta Baruch formerly Abraham.

From which of the siblings do you descend?

Justin

Hello Jeremy,

I descend from  Abraham Sunderland and his wife Taube Abraham via their son Nathan Sunderland.

Louis Baruch was identified as a nephew in the Sunderlands 1871 Census return, and I now understand where the connection is - via the Abraham.

Would you know who the parents of Taube and Henrietta are?

Regards,
Thorby

Hello Thorby,

This is an amazing breakthrough. So both families originated from Margonin.

A quick search on the internet revealed that the Jewish population of Margonin sank from 492 to 352 between 1858 and 1861. That ties in very nicely with the first Manchester births (Verdon Street, Red Bank ?) in the Baruch and Sunderland families.

Based on the names they gave to their sons, I would speculate that Taube's and Henrietta's father was the Yiddish/Hebrew equivalent of Morris, i.e. Mosheh, and he died in about 1856.

Rgds,

Justin

Hi Justin,

I can't help but wonder if any other members of the family also immigrated to the UK.  Other family members who I contacted a number of years ago believe Sunderland is not the original surname, and they thought maybe it was originally Sonderland.  I suspect it was neither and is something else - not yet known.

I found the following information on the http://poznan.jewish.org.pl website for Margonin.  I used Google translator to translate from Polish to English.

In 1788, lived in Margonin 232 Jews in 1834, the 483rd  Among them were family, Abraham, Baruch Cohen, Diamant, Levi, Manasseh, Schocken, Simon and Spiro.

Since the mid-nineteenth century, the drop of the Jewish population.  In 1910 in Margonin lives only 42 Jews.  In 1920, 16 Jewish families choose German citizenship and leave the Margonin.  Are only two families Lewin and Baruch, at the end of 1935, Abraham will leave Margonin. The last burial in the cemetery took place 6 February 1935 and was buried 55 years old when Bertha Baruch.

Hello Thorby,

That's another great find. However, I may have just out-trumped you.

According to the German website of the Institut Deutsche Adelsforschung (http://home.foni.net/~herumstreifer/z1859-03.htm), a Herrmann Baruch and Abraham Sonderling, both of Margonin, were being actively sought by the police in the German Confederation in March 1859. In fact, 'wanted posters' (Steckbriefe) had been produced.

To find out anymore would cost €9.90 per surname or place; and even then, the IDA can only report where the documentary evidence is held. One would then have to contact archives or libraries to get any further.

Sonderling (meaning an eccentric person) is not very far removed from Sunderland. I think this man is your ancestor.

All the best, Justin

Hello Justin,

It seems you did indeed out trump me.  And I am very happy you did.  Thank you for that tidbit.

Sonderling, Abraham, from Margonin, request for warrant of apprehension from the Kingdom of Prussia in the 19.Jahrhundert, HAY, class XLI. (1859), page 88
Baruch, Herrmann, from Margonin, request for warrant of apprehension from the Kingdom of Prussia in the 19.Jahrhundert, HAY, class XLI. (1859), page 88

All I think I have to order them separately from this website www.adelsquellen.de  The translation from German to English has not done the website justice and how to order is a bit confusing for me.

I was wondering - did you find Rebecca Baruch/Barnett in the 1881 UK Census?

Regards,
Thorby
