Where are the missing BARUCH siblings?
« on: Thursday 22 October 09 09:25 BST (UK) »
I would appreciate some help tracing a couple of siblings, four of the nine children of Herman(n) Baruch from Prussian Poland. The family had arrived in Manchester in the late 1850s and were recorded in the 1861 census at 25 Verdon St, Red Bank, Manchester.

However, these children disappear thereafter:

Louis Baruch, b. c1850 Prussian Poland – no trace in or after 1871
Mary Baruch, b. c1852 Prussian Poland – no trace in or after 1871
Michael Baruch, b. c1856 Prussian Poland – no trace in or after 1881
Rebecca Baruch, b. c1858 Prussian Poland – no trace in or after 1871

Note: Prussian Poland is known as Germany from 1871 onwards.

By 1871, Herman had remarried and moved the family (surviving members?) down to Whitechapel.

I imagine that the youngsters died, but I have been unable to find any matching death records (or marriage for that matter). Hopefully, someone out there with better eyes than mine can find them.

Many thanks, Justin

Mary,

Thank you so much. The 1871 record does look like a very good match. I shall investigate further. Dortmund was never in Prussian Poland.

My transcription of Dortmund Prussia was from the image - whether it was given incorrectly by Louis or the landlord, or written incorrectly by the enumerator is a decision for you to make as to whether you think this might be your man or not.

Hello Justin

This could be Louis:

1881 Census
RG11 Piece:442  Folio:114 Page:18
7, Montague Place, Whitechapel
BARUCKS, Louis Head Married 25 Boot Finisher born Russian or Prussian (not clear which) Poland

BARUCKS, Rebecca Daughter Single 7 Scholar Whitechapel, Middlesex
BARUCKS, Esther Daughter Single 5 Scholar Whitechapel, Middlesex
BARUCKS, Augusta Daughter Single 2 Whitechapel, Middlesex

After 1881 Louis seems to have anglicized his surname because it certainly looks like the same family

Had you see these alternative spellings in Whitechapel?

Baruk
Beruch
Barook
Bruch
Barrig
Bruk

And it's possible that any of the following could be either mistranscriptions or Anglicisations:

Barrick / Barwick
Brook / Brooke
Birch / Burch / Berg
Brough
Burke
Bruck / Brack / Brock / Brick
Berish / Berrish
Worcs / Glos: Neal Neale Jeynes Jeens Geans Harris Roper Ropier Colley Dyer Heeks Bayzand Hampton Bishop Cole Elton Littlehales McGowan
Glamorgam: Hampton Thornton Svombo Swambo Swanbo Keefe O Keefe Shanahan Shannon Doyle Maldoon Muldoon Davies Llewellyn Jones
Birmingham: Neale Sarjant Cole Hiley Berridge Tirebuck

Thank you all.

Mary - pls don't feel that I was being critical in any way. Transcribing these foreign place names is an absolute minefield. Incidentally, there is somebody on jewishgen researching BAUCH, SUNDERLAND and LEVI from Margonin (c60 km north of Poznan). I have asked whether their BAUCH is in fact BARUCH. Here's hoping.

Tricia - thanks very much. Unfortunately, BARUCH was a fairly common surname in east London. Two of the siblings who did survive (Abraham and Simon) changed the surname to Barnett in the 1880s/90s.

Ivan - As you can see above, you're not wrong with the surname; a common change amongst Jewish families. However, the Louis/Lewis you found seems to have come from the Russian side of Poland, so I would tend to rule him out.
