Hi Trish, Sarah Ann is listed as 52 years of age on the 1901 census and this is right bearing in mind she was born in 1850.

Yes I have her on the 1911 census, she is listed only as SA Hirst. Her husband Joseph Hirst died on 9th November 1905 so by this time she is widowed.

Does anyone have information for Sarah Ann's death - or does anyone have photographs of her? I'm not sure how close a relation everyone is to this family line...?

Ah! Fantastic.
Sarah Ann is my great great grandmother too - via Janet Endersby - so which of Janet's children was your relative?

-if you don't mind my asking. We lost touch with some extensions of the family and it would be good to share some of this informaiton

Hi Jules,
I've just realised who you are...
My mother passed on a file of information to Carol last year - have you had the opportunity to have a look through this?

We've managed to find a little more information since then and I've resumed working on it once more just this last week.

What was the info you were looking for re Sarah Ann's father?

Gem.

Hi Gem

Yes, I also worked out our connection.  Small world !

Like you I've tended to put my research down and pick it up again ... but I was trying to find out what happened to Sarah Ann's father, William Holliday.

I know he disappeared around Edward's birth in 1850, as according to his birth certificate he was registered by his mother Ann.  I don't think William died, as on the 1861 census it looks like Ann was originally shown as 'deserted by husband', which was then crossed through and domestic servant added.  But I can't find any trace of him anywhere !

I found a baptism for a William Holliday on 23 May 1812 in Calverley Parish Church Records whose father was John.  Not complete sure it's our William, but the year is right and the father's name.  But it struck me that on his marriage certificate to Ann in 1846 he described his father as a 'Gentleman', where Ann certainly came from quite humble beginnings.  If you have managed to trace any information on our Gt Gt Gt Grandfather I would certainly be very interested.

Regards
Jules

I have to say that I'd not attempted to follow William Holliday at the beginning. My friend and I have now looked for some details for him these last few evenings - but nothing. John also doesn't appear on lists of gentry and William does not appear in the trade listings - which really he should, unless of course he was working for someone else and that we would have no way of knowing. I was thinking that if we could identify his town of birth - or family - he may have returned there.

The family went from gentry to poor house in three generations, but 3 & 4 generations on again and I'm sure she'd be proud of us, we're not a bad bunch!! and there are really quite a lot of us all related back to this mysterious woman. I'd be interested to know stories which people have from the other branches - Fred & Ethel, but I have no way of contacting these people.

I'm going to begin looking for William and John, will let you know if I get a breakthrough and if you could let me know anything of interest you stumble upon then that would be appreciated.
