Sarah Ann HOLLIDAY - Birth Record
« on: Wednesday 21 October 09 21:40 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to find a birth record for Sarah Ann Holliday born in Sheffield, West Riding of Yorkshire.   Sarah Ann was aged 1 year old in the 1851 census, so looking at around 1849 - 50.  Mother was Ann Holliday (nee Lancaster) and living in Sheffield in 1851 aged 23 (b 1828).

I've tried variations of the surname i.e. Halliday, Holiday, Haliday with no success so far.  I'm actually wanting to order a copy her birth certificate to solve a mystery around her father, but can't do so without the birth index numbers !!

Hoping someone can help.   :)

Thank you
Jules

Thanks Ambly - well spotted!

I notice that message was posted on 18th and attracted virtually the same replies as this one so I have just wasted an awful lot of time going over the same ground

I also notice Jules info as follows

Quote
William Holliday married Ann Lancaster on 30 May 1846 in Wakefield. William was aged 33 and Ann only 18 (according to the Marriage Certificate) which means William was born circa 1812. He described himself as a bookseller and gave his father as John Holliday, deceased 'Gentleman'.

Quote
In the 1861 census Ann is described as 'married' and her daughter Sarah Ann as a visitor. I had found Edward with his maternal grandparents in Wakefield.

Quote
William must have sold alot of books .... he never came back ! In the 1861 census Ann was back in Wakefield working as a servant with two of her children (the eldest child Alfred, seems to have disappeared too).

There are also several recommendations to purchase birth certs for the younger children

Sarah Ann's birth registration circa 1849/1850  - It's just that, Jules -  without us knowing she was in fact born to a woman who had been married in 1846, we would automatically start to wonder if there was more too it - eg: illigitimacy etc and so try to find out more of that possibility in hopes it would lead to a birth perhaps under something other than expected.

I find it somewhat 'amusing' given the problem, that Ann in 1861 and her daughter Sarah right up to 1883, was living as a servant (?) with a man whose occupation was a Registrar of BDM!  :)

You mentioned  on the othe forum that Ann had 3 children.
The eldest being Alfred - who also disappeared.

When & where was his birth registered?

Cheers

Got to admit it struck me as amusing that whilst they worked for a Registrar, I'm struggling to find a birth record !  I've looked for weeks for a birth record or baptism record on both Sarah and Alfred, but no joy.

I've got a copy of the marriage certificate of Ann (nee Lancaster) and William Holliday in Wakefield in May 1846.
I can find no record of the first son Alfred at all, except a census record for 1851 aged 4 when he was with his maternal grandparents in Wakefield.
I've found Edward's birth record for Sheffield and intend to send for his birth certificate, but again nothing for Sarah Ann.

I am hoping that Edward was registered by William .... but when Edward was 3 months old William looks like he wasn't in the picture and may have left before he was born.  So ideally I'd like to get hold of Sarah Ann's who is 12 months older than her brother and should (fingers crossed) contain her father's details.

Hi it's good to know that there are other people looking for Sarah Ann's records! I've been working on this family line for a long time now. I think I can probably answer some questions if anyone wants to post some specifics for me.

JulesLK I noticed that you have also followed the Endersby line - are you related to Janet Endersby (nee Holliday)?

I also have family memories / stories which have been passed down this line.

I have spent a long long time trying to find a record for Sarah Ann's death. She married Joseph Hirst and so presumably died as Hirst, but I've managed to turn up nothing from the internet research or archives. If anyone has information on this I would be very grateful...?!!

Would love to share some of this information and gain more   :)

Welcome Gem :)
I am sure everyone who has been working on this and others like me who have just started reading it will be thrilled with any info you can give.
I can see the marriage to Joseph Hirst in 1897 but am having trouble finding them on 1901 Census. Did she drop her age?
Do you have them in 1911 Census?

Trish :)
