Good Morning,

I have also been looking for Hannah Hyland.  Do you know if she was the daughter of William and Mary Hyland.  If she was, she had a brother Patrick who left for Australia in 1841.  (see attached).  If the Irish naming convention holds true, she would have been the second daughter of William and Mary.  William Hyland's mother was Hannah Bannon.

Other children of William's went to England, Bridget, Eliza, Thomas, Joseph and Mary.  I believe I am missing at least one son who should have been named William.

My great, great grandfather would have been on of William's younger sons, Joseph.  He lived in England and his family immigrated to the coal region of Pennsylvania, USA.  If you have any other information regarding the Hyland's, especially the older children, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Regards,

Cindy :)

Hi,

Thanks so much for your reply.   How do you know the birth year of Hannah and who she married?  Was she born in Dublin?  Since most of my information is from England, I've been having trouble pinpointing the original home of the Hyland family in Ireland.  Bridget and Mary's census information indicates their births in Queen's county (Laois) but they would be the younger children.   It is definitely a shame that most of the census for Ireland were destroyed.  It seems that the older children may have chosen Australia rather than England but if our theory holds true she would have had a brother in Australia which would have made her choice easier.  From records in England, Patrick would have been the eldest, but possibly because of their age Eliza and Hannah make have ended up in the workhouse in England.  After that experience the trip to Australia wouldn't have been menacing.  The younger children  and Mary, their mother chose to go to England.  I suspect that Mary, the mother, didn't go to England until the death of William.  I have the marriage certificates of some of William and Mary's children and the birth certificates of William and Mary's grandchildren.   Research would be so much easier if they would have called their children Penelope, Morgan, Fiswick..... :D  My children laugh at me when I say that Aunt Mary called because we have so many of them .......  The Irish naming convention sure doesn't help.   ;D

If you are willing to share, I would love to hear about the Australian branch of the Hyland tree.  My email is (*).  How long have you lived in China?  My daughter was in Shanghai.  It was during a "heavy snowstorm".  I think it was a year or two ago.   It was quite a task getting her back to Pennsylvania.   I told her that she brought Northeastern PA weather to China.

Happy New Year to you and yours!

Cindy
