Obituary - GOING
« on: Tuesday 20 October 09 20:16 BST (UK) »
I have the date of death of a Philip James Going - who died in Southampton in 1918.
I'm just wondering if an Obituary were submitted to a newpaper in Southampton at that time  - what Southampton papers should I check  - I don't know anything about Southampton newspapers  - which are the best ones to start with and where could this be done ?

any suggestions welcome

thanks
BG

I would expect the place to go would be Southampton City Archives:

 http://www.southampton.gov.uk/leisure/history/archives/default.asp

But I can't check at the moment - their website is down.  :(

Check back again to see what printed material they have.

Hi BG.

Are you still searching ?!

I came accross an Edmund Going, son of a John Going/Ellen Hayes on the GenForum Going research page ("www.genforum.genealogy.com/going"). He had siblings David, Micheal, Judith, and Catherine, the latter apparently baptised in 1835 in Ireland. Did a quick search for James Philip G but nothing came up.

Altough I am now in Somerset, I was brought up in Sussex. My late father Philip Going had a letter from a Florrie Pankhurst in Southampton in 1984 enquiring as to family history, as her "middle son is quite interested". She was the daughter of Thomas Oakley, brother of grandmother Emma Mary Going (ne้ Oakley). Don't know if Florrie or her son would still be around, or how she got on research-wise, or indeed if she was looking at Goings or just Oakley descendants, but you could try looking for Pankhursts in Southampton.

I don't know the connection between my family and James Philip / Edmund, but as I am sure you know there were Goings everywhere in Ireland (especially Tipperary) from the mid 18th century. My immediate line goes back to a Joseph Going in Maldon, Essex (1795-1874), but I (and a member of the Going clan in NZ) are currently try to establish how/when he or his parents arrived from Ireland. There is some contention in NZ as to the Going/Gowan link, and hopefully this too can be resolved soon.

Happy hunting. Adam

Hi Adam,
Thanks very much for your reply.

Your reference to Edmond Going son of Edmond Going and Ellen Hays is very interesting ...

I can confirm the Philip James Going I mentioned was baptized in Ireland in 1851 to parents Edmond Going and Ellen Collins.
I am also aware of the rich history available of the Goings of Tipperary - however this Philip was born in Cappagh, County Cork.
This pocket of Goings from county Cork seem to have a seperate history to the Tipperary Goings but I am open to anyone who has evidence that suggests they are connected?

While records in the Early 1800s of the Cork Goings show the surname spelt 'Going'  - all present day decendents now spell their surname 'Gowen'  - apart from Philip mentioned above.

regards

Hi BG,

Interesting that the Going in the line you are investigating has changed to Gowen. We have the opposite suggestion that the name Going evolved from McGowan, to Gowan, to Going, but this is only one theory !

I have annecdotal evidence only that Goings arrived in Ireland with Cromwell, specifically three brothers. Robert of Cranagh (Tipperary) seems to be the instigator of my line of the name, but his brothers (supposedly Caleb and Philip) may have settled elsewhere. I have also seen mention of a Stephen as a brother of Robert, but in his case also in Tipp.

I have one male cousin Going in UK, one of his sisters in Uk the other in USA, but apart from that I don't know of any other direct descendants from the same line back to Joseph Going in Maldon (1795-1874).

If I come accross a positive connection between Cork and Tipp. I will let you know.

Regards, Adam
PS. I'm sure it was only a typo, but the Edmond I found was son of JOHN Going & Ellen HayEs.

Hi Adam,

Yes  - That was a type on my part - apologies.
Incidentally I was wondering if you know where in Ireland Edmond was born ?

On the Going surname  - I have read much of the information on the Robert Going of Tipperary  - I believe my Going/ Gowen group can trace back to to a Michael Gowin - He died in 1798 and is buried in Cappagh, Co Cork.
His headstone states he was born in in 1725  - but I have no record of where but by 1766 he was living in Cappagh, Cork.
His name is spelt Gowin and further down on the headstone is the name / word Mac Gabann.  Further down again are references to his decendents and their names are spelt Gowen. ( Though I can confirm from my research that the Going spelling was also used at some stage)

So the name seems to have gone from Gowin -> Going -> Gowen over the generations - ( Personally I have a feeling the reference to the Going spelling in my group may have been clerical errors )
This group were mainly Farmers and Blacksmiths - and Mac Gabhann being the Irish/ Gaelic  for Smith seems to tie in with that.

No, I don't have any information as to Edmund's birthplace, but his siter Catherine was apparently baptised at a place called Fethard, if that might help.

Thanks for all the other gen - you never know when it might play a part !

As an aside...i photographed a GOING grave in Christchurch, NZ in the new year http://www.flickr.com/photos/porkynz/4264852095/in/set-72157617378552226/  never know, he might pop up in a tree somewhere... i'm not connected though.

I am a descendant of William Gowin (aka Gowan/Going/Gowen, etc.) that was first recorded in Virginia in 1751.  I'm not sure if he was the immigrant.  However, I have Y-DNA results of several male descendants that indicate it is rare and known to be indigenous to Scotland.  He or his ancestors may have traveled to the US via Ireland, but I don't have any confirmed info.

If you are missing a William or have participated in Y-DNA, please let me know!

Thanks,
Robert
