Okell's Buildings Macclesfield
« on: Monday 19 October 09 19:52 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know about the history of these buildings or about the Okell family who I assume the buildings were named after?
My ggg grandfather lived there in 1851, he was a hand loom weaver silk and also an undertaker - would love to know more about the street

Thanks Linda

That is a start - so they must be knocked down by the sound of it.  They sound like they were rather large buildings to me - maybe like tenaments ? Funny for an address to be Okells Buildings, rather than Okells Street.

Celia thanks but I could not follow the link it would not open. Yes I made some posts in 2004 about my ggg Thomas Taylor of Okell's Buildings but was trying to find out about him at the time - now I am trying to add a bit of background by trying to find out the streets where they lived.

Hi Cheshiremog

My father asked me to research his family who are originally from Macclesfield, Cheshire.  I was doing a google search on the Okells Buildings as that is where my ggg grandfather lived.  Your post came up - I couldn't believe it when I saw that you were also researching Thomas Taylor, undertaker/hand loom weaver! I know you posted a while a go but I just had to join rootschat.com and get in touch with you!  I hope you don't mind  :)

I haven't an answer, just a comment.  The Okells seem a well known family in Cheshire, some of my ancestors came from Frodsham and Kingsley and there was always an Okell as a witness to a marriage or a will and, in fact, when the headteacher at my grammar school retired at the end of my first year, our new headteacher was a Miss Okell.

Hi Hampton
Good to hear from you. Yes Thomas Taylor born abt 1821 was my ggg grandfather. I traced the Taylor tree back to him but when I ordered Thomas' marriage certificate it was a bit of a shock. In 1845 Thomas married Martha Knowles but the certificate states that Thomas' father was named Henry Wardle - a silk manufacturer. Seems like Thomas was illegitimate I think his mother may have been named Hannah Taylor.  Only Henry Wardle I can find in the Macclesfield area about then later went on to be Lord Mayor of Macclesfield. I am descended from Thomas's son Alfred b. 1850 and his son Alfred b. 1880 and my own grandfather Frederick Taylor was born 1901.  Let me know where you fit in?

Hi Cheshiremog

Thank you for the information that you have shared with me.  It is all very interesting.
I am also descended from Thomas' son Alfred b 1850 and his daughter Annie born 1875. Annie Taylor married William Oldham in 1896.  Their son Ernest Oldham b 1903 is my grandfather.
My dad asked me to do some research into his family and I am really enjoying the process.  But finding your post was the most exciting thing so far! I did not expect that. Thanks again.

Hi to all linked to this chain,

************IMMINENT REVELATION************

I am a TAYLOR myself and I know that there is a definite established link between the TAYLOR name and the Lord Mayor/Silk Manufacturer Henry WARDLE.

Here it is...  Henry Wardle's wife was Susannah HOBSON who was the daughter of the proprietors of Hobson's Dyeworks in Macclesfield, Thomas HOBSON and his wife Margaret nee TAYLOR

I am descended from Margaret HOBSON nee TAYLOR'S illegitimate son, called Thomas TAYLOR born about 1775 before she was married to Thomas HOBSON.  My Thomas was not baptised at birth and only got himself baptised about 20 years later when he wanted to get married.  He appears in the baptism records at Stockport as Thomas TAYLOR HOBSON.

I would be surprised if there is not a link somewhere between my TAYLORs and yours.  I'm on the case.

Best wishes,

Nick Taylor
