GRIFFITHS - Montgomeryshire

GRIFFITHS - Meifod
I would like some help in finding out what became of my great great grandparents, Richard and Susannah Griffiths ( nee Jones)
who appeared on the 1881 census at Perthi, Meifod, Montgomeryshire
Richard was a farm labourer b Meifod 1851 and Susan (or Susannah) was b Llanerfyl 1856.
The record includes my great grandfather Richard, b 1875
I have potential candidates in the 1891Llanfyllin census showing parents plus four younger children
Mary Ann, William ,Frederick and John but the parents ages and occupation ( carpenter) are not quite right
I believe Richard senior was still alive in 1900. Could any distant relatives please help?

I would suggest you may have the correct 1891 census, Richard's birthplace is correct and Susannah's shows as Dolanog which is only 3m from Llanerfyl. Richard's age is consistent with the 1881 census and Susannah's is only 2 years out, not unusual for census records.

I know the transcription isn't a good one but Richard's occupation in 1891 is a gardener,so that would make a bit more sense as he was previously a farm labourer.

Good luck with your research

I agree with Shirl, the family are at Guilsfield in 1891, despite the inconsistancies.

If you look in 1901, your great grandfather Richard is at Peniarth, Meifod:
Richard Griffiths (26), Waggoner
Margaret Jane  "    (24) His wife
Frederick          "  (under 1m) son
Frederick         "    (13) Brother

This brother Frederick (13)  ties in with the Frederick (3) in 1891 in Guilsfield.

Also, in 1901, Richard Griffiths, senior seems to have moved to Shropshire :

Living at Cottage, Stanton upon Hineheath, Wem, Shrops.
Richard Griffiths (50) Ag. Lab., b. Meifod
Mary Ann   "       (19) Dau
John          "       (11) Son
Susannah  "       (8)  Dau
Ellen Jane   "      (6)  Dau
George B.   "      (1)  Son        b. Guilsfield
This last child being born in Guilsfield also gives you further proof of the 1891 census.
However, Richard (senior) in 1901 is still shown as married, though wife Susannah is not at home.
Further investigation suggests she was at The Salop Infirmary at the time:

Susannah Griffiths (46)  though shown as b. Welshpool, Dolanog is not far away.

I have your greatgrandfather Richard (aged 36) at Penyfoel, Meifod in the 1911 census, with wife Margaret (34) & 5 children. (Frederick (10) Herbert (9) Susannah (6) Edward (4) and Florence (2))

Good luck

Many thanks, these results are encouraging and look realistic. I think Susannah may have died in Shropshire in 1902. I will dig around to seek confirmation of the dolanog birth.

Could I please reactivate this one?

I now have Susannah's marriage cert for Llanerfyl in 1877 aged 20. So far so good. Her father is William Jones , farmer, address similar to Plas yn nghane, llanerfyl (?).

I am trying to trace her line back via the 1871 and 1861 censuses. Only match to a William Jones seems to be in the '61 where 4yo Susan(sic) is born in Llandrinio/Llanymynech - not really the same district. I think this is the same Susan who is servant on a farm at Garth Ucha near Llanfihnagel-yn-Yngwnfa in 1871 admittedly much nearer Llanerfyl.I can find no census records for a Susannah Jones born in the Dolanog/Llanerfyl area c1856/7.

There is one in 1861 boarding with a Thomas Jones on a farm nr her declared birthplace of Garthbeibio which is within a few miles of Llanerfyl. But his makes her 8 compared with the 4yo I am looking for - q a significant difference.

Maybe William has already died by 1861 but I would be grateful if someone could locate Susannah's christening - hopefully in the Llanefyl district c 1857.

Hi again

I think the 1871 census you found looks like the correct one for Susanah. The 1861 census where she is shown as a boarder, also shown as boarders are Thomas Jones and Ann Francis. If you have a look at findmypast (there is a fee to look up records) this Susannah is shown on there in 1853.

Good luck with your searching for Susannah
