Thomas Bull - Moreton?
« on: Sunday 18 October 09 17:22 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help me track down the family of Thomas Bull, born around 1818 in Moreton Oxfordshire please.  On his marriage certificate his father is William Bull, farmer.

I haven't been able to find any trace of them other than this.

Regards
Heather

Hi Heather and welcome to RootsChat

Can you tell us when Thomas was married and his wife's name.  Then we might be able to trace him through the censuses.

Hi Linda

Thank you for the welcome. I'm afraid that's all the info I have, DOB and place of birth taken from census returns.

Is it possible to look at Parish records for Moreton do you know?

Regards
Heather

Hello Heather

Moreton isn't a parish and does not have any records of its own.  It is a hamlet in the parish of Thame, Oxfordshire.

Unfortunately I do not have a transcript of the Thame parish registers so I can't check them for you (perhaps some kind person who has access to these will do a look up for you).  However, I have found a possible candidate for Thomas BULL's father in the 1851 census:

Ref: HO107/1726  Folio 320 Schedule 53 - Moreton in the parish of Thame, Oxfordshire
William BULL, Head, Mar, 58, Farmer of 98 acres employing 5 labourers, born Northamptonshire
Sarah BULL, Wife, Mar, 63, born Bucks, Haddenham
The household also contains 1 female servant

I also looked up William and Sarah in the 1861 census in the hope that I might get a more specific birthplace for William, and, although a place is stated it is not very clear:

Ref: RG9/884 Folio 155 Schedule 12 - Farm, Priestend, parish of Thame, Oxfordshire
William BULL, Head, Mar, 66, Farmer of 98 acres employing 3 men and 2 boys, born Northamptonshire, Brandham?
Sarah BULL, Wife, Mar, 74, birthplace not given

Hope this helps

Heather,

Here is a probable baptism, from the Thame Parish Register transcript (courtesy of OFHS)

Mar 26 1819 - Thomas BULL son of William and Mary of Morton - grazier

I'll have a look for other details (siblings, parent's marriage etc)

Heather,

Possible sibling for Thomas:

5 May 1820 - William BULL son of William and Mary of Moreton farmer

Possible marriage of parents ??

29 Nov 1818
BALL William bach otp
BALL or BULL Mary wid otp
witnesses: Martha TAPPING, Mary Groves SMITH, Spencer SMITH
by Licence

Interestingly, the index shows William as BULL not BALL.

Harry

It looks as though William BULL married twice.  Is there a burial entry for his first wife (Mary) and his marriage to his second wife (Sarah) in the Thame parish registers?

Thank you all so much for all the hard work you are putting in to this.

There is a definite link to Haddenham as Thomas Bull married Mary Plater from Haddenham.  Mary had a much older sister Sarah who I suppose could possibly have been William's 2nd wife.

I'm surprised I haven't got webbed toes!
