Irish family research
« on: Wednesday 16 September 09 12:22 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help please:

I found a relative in Scotland by the name of William O'May and his wife was Margaret Milloy
on the census record it stated that He at least was from Ireland.
Also my grgrgrgrandfather (Possibly Alexander Muir Smith) known as Muir Smith a Freestone Quarry Master was born in Ireland.  Muir is my grgrans grgrandfather.  Alexander Smith was his son and he married a Janet O'May whose father was William.

Could anyone take a peak and see if they can track them down.  They are probably protestant, because they used to make my nan watch the orange marches in Glasgow.  This is the only information I have.  I did a check and O'May is not common only 5 births registered in a given period of time, whereas May or Maye there are loads.

I see that there haven't been any replies to your thread probably for 2 reasons- one, the thread was locked (I've unlocked it now) and two, you haven't given us enough information.
"I found a relative in Scotland by the name of William O'May and his wife was Margaret Milloy on the census record it stated that He at least was from Ireland." I this a Scottish census? please give us the year and other details like William's age as this will make a big difference whether or not there will be a birth certificate for William, etc.
"Also my grgrgrgrandfather (Possibly Alexander Muir Smith) known as Muir Smith a Freestone Quarry Master was born in Ireland." Same with this person- we need at least an approxiamate date. Muir would generally be a Scottish spelling so in Ireland the name might appear as Moore but without dates we really can't help with information and advice.

Hello marcie

On a parent search through IGI, I can see two possible births to a William O'May and Margaret Milloy. These being a Catherine Taylor O'May on 30/1/1863 in Campbeltown and an Alexander O'May on 13th June 1860, also at Campbeltown.

If this is the same family and assuming the parents married pre 1860, have you checked scotlandspeople for marriage certificate and/or death certificate for William, as either should (assuming marriage after 1854) give his parents names, which in turn could help with finding him in Ireland. Or, if he and Margaret actually married in Ireland , the birth certificates of their children born in Scotland, should indicate when/where they married, which could also aid your research.

marcie has sent me more details-
Quote from: marcie dean
On a Scottish Census of 1861 for the Barony of Pollockshaws in the parish of Eastwood
75 Main? Street it states
Moor Smith Head Aged 28 Freestone Quarrier born in Ireland (doesn't state where)
makes his d.ob. approx. 1833
Wife: Agnes Kirkwood aged 26 born Renfrewshire
Alexander 8, William 2 and Margaret 5 months. All born  Renfrew and surrounding area
Agnes Kirkwood visitor  aged 89 born in Paisley.
According to 1861 census Alexander M. Smith was born c1833 in Ireland. Civil registration of births in Ireland started in 1864 but before you can search for church records (or any other records) in Ireland you'll need to know where he lived (parish if not actual townland). Suggest you continue tracking Alexander in each possible Scottish census to see if he included even the county in Ireland.

Your PM also said you hadn't yet found details of William O,May in Scottish records but when you do let us know what you've found so that we can try to help you.

Muir Smith and William O'May Margaret Milloy

Hi,
I went onto the IGI and did a search for Alexander Muir Smith. Muir Smith.  Came up with a list but my computer would not open the page.  Probably too much information!!! Poor little brain could not cope.
So I would like to ask if someone would take a look for me.  I found him in Scotland in 1871, 1861 but cannot find him in 1841, although I know he was in Scotland around 1851/52 married to Agnes Kirkwood.  His son Alexander Smith married Janet O'May daughter of William O'May and Margaret Milloy in Campbeltown Argyll in 1875 on 3rd March that year. Alexander was born in Scotland from memory in Renfrew Eastwood.
I will take another look for William and Margaret just to check the details I do have which are few.

Hi all,
I think I may have solved half the story.  I found an entry in 1841  not sure that it is them, if someone could check for me.  The problem is on old marriage certs they do not state age or parents names accept on a few occasions.  I have the following from a census on Kilbarchan Renfrew 1841
Hugh Smith aged 40 Agr. Lab from Ireland (does not state where)
Mary                      40   Gros Data 568/00  005/00 003
Elizabeth              19
Ann                       17
Margaret                15
Mary                      12
Muir                       11
Lolla                      5
Alexander              9

Considering that Muir married Agnes in 1852 that would make it about right for age etc.
23rd. October 1852 Parish of Eastwood in the County of Renfrew.

Now to find William O'May and Margaret Milloy

By the way checked my records on SP did not have death cert info on Muir although I have Agnes death and Alexander Smith her son cert info.
Looked for Muir, Moor Smith on SP OPR and could not find him there.  I suppose I could use the site info to look for his grave if he was buried.
One good thing, if this is him then I have his parents names and all his siblings as well

Hi Marcie
I have just discovered your post today, albeit four years after it was posted. I am not sure if you are still interested in contacting "Omays" from Scotland but if you are, then maybe I can help.  My birth surname is Omay and I was born in Campbeltown. William Omay and Margaret Milloy are my great great grandparents.

Please feel free to get in touch if you wish. It would be nice to have a chat and see where our family links lie.

Best wishes
