O"Neill of Whitechurch
« on: Friday 16 October 09 23:15 BST (UK) »
Hi ,
I am hoping someone will know something about my Great Grandfather James O'Neill b 1851 in England , he was a carriage maker in Whitechurch,Co Wexford (where they also lived) and had up to 15 people working for him. His wife 's name is Sarah ? b 1848. Their daughter Katherine "Katie" was my grandmother. She went to live in Waterford after she married. No one in my family has any info on them, I have found them in the 1911 census, have no idea where they married or are buried.

Hi Mary,
Thank you that sounds very promising and I will try and follow that up.  Its just so frustrating trying to find information when you do not live in the country.
Thank you so much.

Hi Mary,

I have no idea at all, until  I started researching a while ago and mainly  thanks to the 1911 census,  that gave me  the names of both. I  had no idea who my Great grandparents were at all, on both sides of my fathers family. Very closed mouthed people I guess, then again a lot of that generation can not understand why we need to know at all. Looking for a James O'Neill in England will be next to impossible without any area or parents to focus on.

Cheers Lynda

Hi Lynda,

do you know about Irish BMD records on Family Search?

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start

If the couple Mary found are yours - there is a marriage that you can send for the details.

Waterford/Kilkenny 1871 Vol 4 pg 1103 Sarah Power matches with a James O'Neill.  You could send for this certificate to http://www.groireland.ie/

A birth certificate for a child would give you the mother's surname.

best wishes

Hi Haywood,
Thanks for the info. I am not sure if these name fit with what I found in the 1911 census. They may be a little too early, its hard to tell and I know there may be other siblings that had already left home at that point. Sending for a birth cert is a great idea, I should have thought of that.

Cheers Lynda

Hi,
I agree but the marriage date fits with the information from IGI that Mary provided.
If there weren't any older children than in 1911 census then it's probably wrong.
I have just seen them in 1901 census index - only part of Wexford census has been transcribed on this site and luckily Whitechurch has been  ;D
Patrick is the oldest child at 21 yrs on that so perhaps then the marriage for James and Sarah is wrong.

http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census/census.shtml

It is only an index so there is no other information. One thing though, is that I have in the past seen a birthplace transcribed in that census if it wasn't in the county or country. However that may have depended on the transcriber. :-[

good luck

Hello Haywood,
I went to the 1901 site however my Irish luck has forsaken me I could not get a match for anything I tried. I am very new to computers and may have missed a step ? Have you had any luck sending for birth certs without the full birth date? I agree that this would be next step to find info on both sides of my fathers family.

Regards Lynda
