William Aicken from Donaghadee
« on: Friday 16 October 09 21:17 BST (UK) »
Hi

Im trying to trace any information about my Great Grandfather William Aicken (or any of the possible spelling variations, who was born in June 1887, in the Ballyhay area.

He married Elizabeth Dunwoody and they had three boys (or at least that is all I have been able to trace so far - James, George and John (my Grandfather), but sadly she died (29 July 1909) within a year of Johns birth in 1908.

After this William went to Canada and although he sent back some mementos to the boys we have no trace of him after this.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation

Welcome to Rootschat. Are you trying to trace William's family in Ireland or find out what happened to him in Canada?

Hi and thanks forthe welcome.

I am interested in what happened to him in Canada, as I hopefully have the tree for the Co Down branch

In that case I'll move this thread over to Canadian board for further help.

Sadly no - and here in lies the problem, indeed nothing was ever heard from him after the initial gift (a little gold Maple leaf tie pin).  Really I would just like to tie up this loose end.

Thanks

Hi
Just out of curiosity, what is the marriage year of William and Elizabeth, seems odd that he would have fathered that many children before age 22 if he was born in 1887.

Latest is that his name wasn't William after all - rather it was Robert James (and William was his Cousin with whom he traveled.

It would appear that they travelled on the SS Columbia - sailing from Londonderry to New York in 1910,where he is recorded as being 29.

We are still certqain that he moved to Canada, but have no idea where to or when.

Hi Gopher,

Looking at Robert and William passenger lists, they note they are headed to William's brother Thomas Aicken in Pittsburgh, Penn.
