William Knight, born Leicester c.1852
« on: Friday 16 October 09 13:21 BST (UK) »
Can anybody either suggest, or if they wouldn't mind, do a lookup in, any resources to help me try to find out more about William, my great grandfather?
I found him in 1881 first, living with my great grandmother and my grandfather Frank, who was 1 or less.  William was recorded as born 1852 in Leicester.
I can't see him in 1871, but in 1861 there's a lad of the right age (9) & down as born in Leicester living in Leicester as a boarder with John & Lucy Taylor & their daughter Harriet (25).
Any help to try to find William's parents will be warmly appreciated.
Life gets complicated too, as despite what the 1881 census says William never actually married Sarah Smith, as I've recently found out, and Frank was actually registered as Frank Knight Smith, and by 1891 has two younger Smith siblings!
Many thanks in anticipation.
Phil

Living in the same household in 1861 are James Knight, 20, b Leics. and his wife, Elizabeth.

In 1851 (HO107/2090) James is living with his parents (Thomas, 39 and Margaret, 36) and siblings which go down to Henry, 6 and Abell, 1.

In 1861 (RG9/2293) Thomas and Margaret still have Henry, 16 and Abel, 10 at home.

None of this is proved but it seems possible that William was born shortly after the 1851 census (Sep 1851 Leic.) and then wasn't at home in 1861 because he was with his brother.

Thanks Richard - yes I'd seen James & Elizabeth, but thought I'd read the original record as having them next door to where William lived with the Taylors.   As William was too old to be their son, I'd not thought of following them up - mental block I guess.  Anyway, will try tracking more about Thomas & Margaret.
Thanks also Amber - will send for the copy certificate, but not until after the upcoming postal strike!!
