« on: Friday 16 October 09 10:04 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am looking for information on a Patrick O'Shea possible birth abt 1879 (may not have been in Wales) but I also have a possible marriage in December 1899 in Pontypridd. Also a daughter Mary born in Pontypridd in 1901/2. Any help would be great. Thanks :-[

Hi Angie,

Have you looked for this family in 1911 census? That would be a good idea, I think.

This is all guess work from your information.
Marriage: possible bride- Hannah Hurley

After looking at 1911 index- don't think this is your family  :'(

1901 census

1901 RG13; Piece: 5005; Folio: 69; Page: 20

9 Napier Street Llanwonno

Thomas O Shea m 23 yrs Coal miner b Ireland
Hannah m 34 yrs  b Ireland
Katie Cahill stepdaughter 12 yrs  b -do-
John 8 yrs  -do-  b -do-
Abigail 6 yrs  -do- b Mountain Ash Glamorgan
Julian -do- 2yrs  -do-
Mary E O Shea 1 month  b-do-

plus several boarder

A few entries below there is a John Hurley 62 yrs with a daughter Ellen.

Not sure at all- am hoping that 1911 may help you with other family names perhaps.
 ??? :-\  :)

there are births on Free BMD
1896 Albina Cahill Pontypridd
1898 Julia Cahill Pontypridd

which fit with the other children and going off the older children Hannah would be in Ireland in 1891.
However there is a Hannah Hurley in 1891 in Merthyr  ??? so as I said it's best to find your particular group for 1911 first and then work back.

Just had a quick look at indexes for 1911- can see the Cahills with a Hannah Shea I think so this family is not yours (I don't think). It looks as though your Mary is born later.

Back again- I was so cross with myself for going off on the wrong one  ::)

This looks more likely

1901 RG13; Piece: 5006; Folio: 106; Page: 12

68 Cardiff road Llanwonno

Patrick Shea 25 yrs Collier above ground b Cork Ireland
Hannah 25 yrs  b -do-
Cathrin 6 months b Glamorgan Mountain Ash
plus several boarders

I'm going to stop now - before I get any other wrong 'uns.

Hi Angie,

I've just come across your post from 2009 and I am very excited! I'm praying you will receive this message!

I am almost certain that the Patrick O'Shea you are enquiring about is my great-grandfather's brother (Daniel O'Shea). If my research is right Patrick was born in Gurrane, Banteer, Cork circa 1875. Daniel was born in 1879. Patrick and Hannah (Hurley), also from Ireland were married in the Pontypridd district (which included Llanwonno). I live close to this area. I'm Welsh born and bred and even speak the language!

In the 1901 census Patrick and Hannah lived with their first born Catherine in 68 Cardiff Road, Llanwonno, Mountain Ash. By the 1911 census they were living at 26 Napier Street, Llanwonno, Mountain Ash. They now had 7 children in total; Catherine, Mary, Timothy, John, Patrick, Hannah and Daniel (I presume he was named after my great-grandfather as he moved to Wales from Ireland if not with, then not long after, Patrick).

I would really love to hear from you to know what your connection is and to see if I can learn anymore about the O'Shea's.

Best wishes

Beth
