Tiverton Parish Records - DAINTREE
« on: Thursday 15 October 09 13:23 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to find out why my great x4 grandfather went from being a school teacher to moving up to Birkenhead where he worked as a toll collector. The last place confirmed place I have his family before moving to Birkenhead is in Tiverton.

I am looking for the PR record for Samuel John Catherock DAINTREE who is listed on the GRO as being registered in Tiverton in the 3rd quater of 1869. His father is John Thomas Daintree and mother Sarah Leafe Wilkinson. I have searched all the online records I can find.

In later life Samuel took to spelling his name as D'Aintree, I do not believe you will find him on the PRs as that, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

My main interest is Samuel's dads occupation, but also his exact date of birth and christening date would also be great.

Thank You for any help that you might be able to offer,

You've already mentioned 'Toll Collector', and maybe you've got them on all relevant census ?

according to the 1881 census, Sam's Dad John T Daintree was a 'Ferry Collector (Woodside) Dock'

RG11/3577; Folio: 46; Page: 1 - Birkenhead
184 Conway Street

I note that Sarah was also a Teacher, and the kids are born as far apart as Yorkshire and Tiverton, with Surrey, St Olave too figuring.

Wow that was quick, thank you ever so much! I have been looking for that 1871 census record for ages and I had sort of given up on finding it. I had all the others but that one had been eluding me and fills in another gap. Now I have to workout at what point he stopped being a teacher, stopped being employed and when between 1871 and 1881 they moved to Birkenhead.

I was that 1861 census that really intrigued me about him. Eaton or Eaten appears, according to my research, to be an archaic spelling of Eton College, so I have been wondering why someone from Eton would have made such a drastic career change.

I am also looking to trace John Thomas Daintree b.1819 Lambeth, former schoolmaster who moved to Birkenhead, Cheshire in second half of 1800's.

To the original poster, did you discover any further?

Hello and Welcome to the Forum
I'm not the original poster but here's what I have.
John Thomas Daintree bapt 19.9.1819 s of Edward and Sarah of Brook St Lambeth turner .Born 25 .8.1819 Newington The couple married 21.10.1810 at St Saviours Southwark. She was Sarah George. Edward bapt 26.11.1786 at the same church s of Edward.
1841 Vauxhall Walk with parents
Edward 50 y turner
Sarah 50 N
George 20
John 20 school master y
Henry 19
Tabitha Day FS 16 N

1851 he is school master Calbourne Hamps His brother Edward Cathrock Daintree also a school master is working at Northwood Hampshire so that may be the reason for the job.
The same year back in London to marry at St Peter's Eaoton Square
John Thomas schoolmaster Eaton Mews father Edward Catherick D turner
Sarah Penny same address d of Joseph labourer
She seems to died Sep 1854 and is buries West Nolrwood Cemetery age 39.
He then remarries Sarah Leafe at Christ Church Southwark 30.5.1857 (section missing Ancestry)
It seems her parents were Rowland Wilkinson school master born 1797 and his wife Mary nee Leafe born 1798. She was bapt 23.5.1830 at Holborn.

24.9.1858 he is a school master on daughter Mary Ann Sarah Catherock baptism  Green Walk also at Christ Church
15.6.1860 Alice Thornton Catherock at Burton in Lonsdale Thorntons Schools schoolmaster
Mar qtr possible son John born and died  Settle reg district
16.4.1864 St Olave George Edward Catherock of Magdalan St also school master
11.6.1866 ST John Horseley Down same address and occupation Thomas Wilkenson Catherock
5.9.1869 Tiverton Samuel John Catherock West Ere clerk in Post office.
1871 Gold St out of work scripture reader and wife Sarah a reader
4.12.1880 Birkenhead News he is witness to an attempted suicide. He works on the ferry.
1881  and 1891 Ferry collector Birkenhead -Conway St and Hamilton Square
1889 he was called a clerk on his daughter's Mary Ann's marriage to Uriah Godsell
He died 1897 in Birkinhead- June qtr .Wife Sarah Mar qtr 1897.

So something must have happened 1866-1869 which lead to him leaving London. No Info in Post Office directories to say when he got to Tiverton or left.
And while it's possible he went To Eton I very much doubt it ,given it was fee paying. But his father did own property in 1860 at College Road Highbury and was entitled to Vote. The larger family could read and write .

That's all I have

ps Cathrock comes from his great grandmother Ann Cathrock who married Edward Daintree of St Clement Danes in 1751.
Edward Cahrock Daintree bapt 1786 s of Edward and Clare
Edward bapt 8.3.1761 s of Edward and Ann  at St Clements .
