I was given a list of the baptismal records of the Pennells in Northfleet from 1820's to 1870's. Joseph and Lucy had only one child listed. That was Jane 4 April 1829. Then there is a later listing for Elizabeth (listed as both daughter and granddaughter of Joseph and Lucy) 19 July 1846, dau of Jane (illegitimate). So that seems to be how Elizabeth fits into this family. Maybe raised by the grandparents.
There is also discussion about Joseph's birth place. One is listed as Kennington, Surrey I believe. Two of the Pennell men in the list I got were Richard married to Frances and Charles married to Ann. I checked for them in census and they are both listed as being born in Kensington, one in 1812 the other in 1813. Wonder, if when asked that question, the census taker misunderstood and his should also read Kensington, Middlesex???
I am trying to put this family together from the records I have. I know the father of Thomas Pennell is Charles, mother Mary listed as Pinnell in Thomas' baptismal record in Hammersmith. From the naming patterns they used I believe that my Thomas, this Richard and Charles are brothers. Possibly Joseph is also a brother. There was also a John born about 1817 at Westminster who may be a brother. He used many of the same names.
If anybody is interested I would post the information I got for this family. Maybe together we can figure out who goes with whom.
Let me know
