Lancashire Lookups of Hobins
« on: Monday 12 October 09 20:09 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm pretty new at this so I hope I'm doing this correctly.
I'm looking for death information of a Michael Hobins of Wigan, Lancashire Co.  He died sometime between 1856 & 1860.  I can't find where, or exactly when, but his wife (Fanny Hobins) remarried in 1861.  I've checked the Wigan Heritage Center and there is no one by that name that passed in that time period.  Any suggestions on where to look next?  The name Hobins is a hard one too, it was spelled a few different ways, any suggestions would be most appreciated.  Could someone do a look up or suggest where to look?

Thanks
Cathy

Hi

Fanny re-married as Hobens

Can you tell us a bit about Michael?  Was he born in Wigan?  Did he and Fanny have any children and were they born in Wigan?

Is 1856 the year their last child was born?

Do you know if Michael was shown as a seaman/mariner on his marriage cert - I'm wondering if he died at sea

Yes Fanny Boylan married Michale Hobbins (spelling on marriage cert) in Wigan, in 1851.  He listed his occupation as a tailor.  He was born in Ire. abt 1830.
They had 3 daughters, all born in Wigan, the last being born in Feb 1857.
(ea daughter had the name Hobins spelled differently, i.e., Obins, Obans, Obens, on their birth cert, but it seems to be pronounced the same).
Fanny remarries in Wigan in 1861 stating she is a widow (on the marriage cert).
Hope this helps.  I am stumped!  I have been thru Lancs death index also and can't find anyone his age that passed.

Thanks
Cathy

Hi

I see what you mean!!  This is a total longshot - Michael Devons March qtr 1859

The 1851 has no entry and there is no birth entry in Lancs

I have discounted the Michael Hogan death in December 1856 as there is a birth in the same qtr

There are 2 possible explanations:

The page with the entry on is unreadable hence no transcription

He went on a visit back to Ireland and died there (even bigger longshot!!)

I've just checked the full GRO death index from 1856-March qtr 1861 which is when Fanny re-married and all pages are legible and all quarters are there so bang goes my theory about them being beyond transcription

Nothing under Hobin/Hobins/Hobbins/Hoban or anything remotely looking like it

Hi,

No idea why he'd be 100 miles across the country, but there is this one,

Michael HOBAN    Jun Q 1857     Glanford Brigg    Lincolnshire    7a  367

Michael HOBAN
Age: 30
Date of burial: 17 May 1857
Place of burial: Wrawby, Lincolnshire
Dedication: All Saints

I can't find a Michael HOBAN/OBAN etc in that area in 1851.

Regards
Daisy

Thank you so much for your input and searches.  I have even thought maybe he decided to emmigrate and left them behind, but I don't know where to start.  How would I go about getting RC church records?  Would church records mention when he passed or died at sea?

Thanks again for all your input and searching!!
