I am trying to trace Charles THER born 1792 in Boxgrove, Sussex whose occupation, on his marriage records to Mary Charlotte BROOMHEAD on 15 December 1813, is given as Sussex Militia.
I wondered if anyone has access to the Sussex Muster Rolls for this period or, could suggest how else I might find out more about this man and his military career?
Charles died in 1845 in Ely Cambridgeshire and is buried at Holy Trinity. He appears on the 1841 census as Charles SHEAR in Leigh, Kent an Excavator although family legend has it that he was an engineer working on the first railway tunnel.
I know that I already have more information than we can often find, but I feel there is more to know about this man! Family legend also states that he may have been born to "royalty though on the 'wrong side of the blanket'". Perhaps this is as exagerated as the engineer claim but I'd like to try and find out.
Thank you, Sue
