« on: Sunday 11 October 09 11:25 BST (UK) »
hello,my wifes grand father patrick michael finn, born 1899,was an orphan,he appears in the 1911 census at artaine south industrial school aged 12,we are unsure of his place of birth,in fact he could have been born anywhere in ireland and sent to dublin.does anyone have any ideas where the records are for the industrial school, this one was run i think by the christian brothers.this may give us information as to where to look as his place of birth, after he left the school,he went to kenagh in longford and became a tailor, any help please,he also had a sister esther, younger than him
i am researching my dangerfield roots, that stem from wiltshire to gateshead back to wiltshire then to london

Hi

It would be worth checking the 1901 census to see where Patrick Michael Finn was ten years earlier.

Cheers

thank you,i think our library may have the 1901 irish cnsus on microfesh,i will have to try that,i spoke to one of patricks daughters yesterday, she asures me he was born in dublin,i found his sister esther yesterday in the 1911 census at st johns industrial school 8.2 wilmer road, bir urban, kings co,she was 10,making her birth 1901,so it seems all roads lead to the dublin 1901 census

Esther's birthplace listed as 'City of Dublin' in 1911 census. Had a quick look at civil registration index again but can't see her birth registration.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

thanks aghadowey,i did see that on the 1911 census, but saying city of dublin is like saying london,it doesn,t help much, during the conversation yesterday,my wifes aunt did say that, they were both being brought up by an aunt,in north dublin, but this is the good bit,the aunt was elizabeth smith, there must be hundreds of smiths, but i would think that north dublin area will be the place to look at,but one other snip i have found is a chance of baptismal record for 1899 in the haymarket#st pauls area or arran quay ward dublin city, but as i don,t know the city,i can,t tell where these places are,i need a bit of local knowledge,i think, thanks to all trying to help,i am sure we will find out one day

Haymarket St is very close (about 300 meters) to St. Pauls, Arran Quay.. see google map : http://www.rootschat.com/links/079j/  This is in the registration district of Dublin North.

I dont see any Patrick Finn births registered in the Dublin North  district in 1899 but there is an unnamed record that could tie in with the baptism you mentioned -

 Name: male Finn
 Registration district: Dublin North
 Record type: Birth
 quarter / year: Jul - Sep 1899
 Volume: 2 / Page: 514

orders for certs by post are processed by the GRO in Co. Roscommon - see the order form here :  http://www.groireland.ie/apply_for_a_cert.htm

fill in the index details mentioned above and ignore any details on the form that you dont know (RSI number, parents etc..)
