Jersey birth look-up please
« on: Saturday 10 October 09 18:09 BST (UK) »
Please can someone help?
I have been trying to trace the birth of Jane Se[a]ward for some time. On the 1851 census [London] 'where born' is given as 'On the sea, English Channel'.
Her father is George Seward and I have traced him and his wife Margaret to Jersey on the 1841 census, St Savior. Unfortunately, no Jane. She was born about 1835.
Many thanks for any help.
Pauline

Hi Pauline,

I only joined the forum today and the very first message that I read was you one, it was the Jersey birth that caught my eye because I actually live in Jersey.

I will happily take a look in our registers for you, I'm at our local library most lunch times doing my own research so it will be a please.  Hopefully George and Margaret registered their daughters birth but if I don't find anything in the births I'll check the baptisms, so fingers cross.

Kind regards
Sandra

Thank you Margaret, thats very kind of you. Jane was a bit flexible with her date of birth, so if its not too much touble, will you please check a year or two either side of 1835?
Thanks again,
Pauline

No problem with the dates, I was going to start with 1830, I had heard someone say that birth dates in the 1841 were not always accurate and you should allow for 5 years either side in some cases, especially with older people.

Should be able to let you know tomorrow evening because I will be going to the library at lunch time, if I can't find her I will inquire as to the best way to go on this one.

Kind regards
Sandra

Hi Pauline,

Unfortunately I have drawn a blank, I have checked all the births and baptism registers from 1825-1845 and have not found Jane, I suspect her parents didn't register the birth or have her baptized.  The ladies I spoke too at the library told me that that was often the case, as you say and I have seen for myself she isn't even on the 1841 census.

Best of luck with the rest of your research and sorry I could not have given you a more positive answer.

Kind regards
Sandra
