Elizabeth, New Jersey - Probably
« on: Saturday 10 October 09 15:55 BST (UK) »
I'd be so very grateful if some one would help me look for anything on the Dewar Family.

They emigrated from Scotland to New Jersey in the 1920s.

I have found them on the 1930 census living in Madison Ave, Elizabeth, Union County, New Jersey, but I'd so love to have further info like death dates or marriage information of their daughter, if indeed she did marry.

From the 1930 census the family are, Peter 35yrs (on the census he's Petter), Kate 36yrs and Jean Dewar who is 13 yrs old.

I can't make out Peters occupation from the census form, its very crammed, looks like cup-something or other on the rail road.

Anyway I'd be so grateful of any help.

Thank you in advance.  :)

WWII Draft Registration Card  26 Apr. 1942
Peter Dewar
Place of residence - Washington Valley Road, Pluckemin, Somerset Co., New Jersey
Mailing address - Box 16, Pluckemin, NJ
Telephone - Somerville 811-J-2
Age 47, born April 5, 1895 in Yoker Scotland
Person who will always know his address:  Mrs. Adele Dewar, Washington Valley Rd., Pluckemin, NJ
Employer - Central Railroad of N.J., Jersey City, Hudson Co., NJ
White, 5' 6 1/2" tall, hazel eyes, bald, ruddy complexion

Do you have the passenger lists for this family?  I found Peter coming to New York in April, 1923 and Catherine & Jean following to Boston in Nov. 1923.

I think Peter's occupation on 1930 might be carpenter?

If you don't know of a mother/sister-in-law named Adele, then I'd probably guess she's a 2nd wife.

Peter's passenger list is available for free on www.ellisisland.org.  When you look at the original manifest, make sure you click on "next" for the first page of his manifest.

If you have an exact date of birth for Jean, you might want to try searching the Social Security Death Index on www.rootsweb.com with just the first name Jean and the date of birth and see if there are any likely possibilities.  You could do the same for Kate/Catherine, but she's more likely to have died too early to make it on there.

Unfortunately, there's not much available online for New Jersey in the 20th century.

I'm not related to this family.  I was just trying to help the original poster find more information.
