Stuck!
« on: Saturday 10 October 09 14:59 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

Sorry if this has been asked before but I feel I have been banging my head against a brick wall trying to figure this out myself so I thought I'd see if I can get some help!

My ancestor George Habbershon is listed in the 1841 census as living in Darton with his wife Hannah and their numerous children. I have tracked down his marriage to Hannah Truelove on the IGI (and seen it in the Darton BT) as occuring on July 25 1824. In the 1841 census George and his family say they were born in Yorkshire (his children were all born in Darton - again in the BT). He then died in 1846, aged 44. I believe he had a brother named Joseph (a Joseph Habbershon's wife-to-be Phyllis Grayson was a witness at George's Habbershon's wedding) who died in 1832 aged ~32. The problem is I cannot get any further back and am at a complete and utter loss as to what to try next.

Can anyone give suggestions or help, or am I just going to have to accept it isn't going any further back?

Thanks for your help,
J.H.

In the IGI there are extracted records of a birth for George Habbershon 24 Mar 1808 and Christened 24 Apr 1808 in Attercliffe, Yorkshire. His parents were John and Elizabeth. A marriage for them shows she was Elizabeth Alsop married 26 Apr 1807 in Cathedral St Peter, Sheffield.
A Christening for John is 4 June 1775 in Cathedral St Peter, Sheffield with his father as William Habbershon. There is also a brother William Christened 24 Nov 1771 in the same place, he married Maria Almond 19 Nov 1790 same place.

Someone has entered a birth for William (the father) as About 1751 in Sheffield and say's he died a Man of War, Atlantic Ocean. His father was Joseph.

Hope this helps.

Hi Otters,

I have seen that record, and another in 1808 in Glossop. The problem is that 6 years difference between the baptism (1808) and George's supposed birth date (1802) seems to be a rather a bit too big. I think I am right in thinking that the Sheffield record also doesn't come with one for Joseph (with the same parents that is).

I have also had someone look for me and they could not find any other (adult) Habbershons buried in Darton between around 1800 and 1841, so presumably wherever George and Joseph moved from, their parents did not move with them.

Thanks again though!

Don't be put off by the difference in birth date and baptism date.  I've just found three children, born 1850, 1852 and 1854 all baptised on the same date in 1857!!  Parish record gives the actual date of birth  ;D

Hi BumbleB,

The Glossop record gives George's birth as 27 Feb 1808 unfortunately. I think I have also found the Otters' Sheffield George in the NBI dying age 6.

Thanks everyone for responding (and by all means keep them coming) -  I am determined not to be beaten but I am running out of avenues to go down at the moment!

I do have one other quick question. If, say, I was looking for a baptism in a specific church in Barnsley - the IGI reference for Barnsley is C093451. Does that cover all conformist churches in Barnsley (I note that non-conformists seem to have their own reference)?

Most films cover only one church.  If you go onto the Family Search website, go into library catalogue, then enter the town you will end up with a list of information available for that town.  If you then contact your local LDS family history centre they can order the film of the parish registers for you - I think the cost has now gone up to £7++ for a hire period of 3 months - and you will have to attend in person to do this, and pay up-front.  When the film arrives the centre will contact you and you can make arrangements to view the film on-site to suit yourself.  You will have to attend the family history centre to do this, you can't take it way to look at.

Hi BumbleB,

Thanks for your help, I've had a quick look and was wondering how you know if the record is searchable on the IGI online?

Ooh ???  That's a good question.  I think you just have to try on Family Search, but I do know that the parish record films sometimes have much more information than is shown on IGI or the Hugh Wallis site, especially in Yorkshire,  After all the transcribers for IGI are set specific parameters, and sometimes the parish registers have much more information.  Remember also that the West Riding participated in the Dade registers where parents and grandparents on both sides are quoted  for a period of time for baptisms ;D ;D  There is no substitute for looking at the original documents  ;D

Hi jdh509

Have you looked at the Hugh Wallis website? That tells you exactly what is covered by each batch number in a specific area. For Yorkshire you need this link

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyYorkshire_(A-D).htm#D

As your George was evidently not born in Darton you need to check the surrounding parishes first. You can find out which they are by using Genuki

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/index.html

or by downloading Parloc (just google for this)

You will never get the same degree of certainty for pre 1837 records as you had when you could rely on the census and GRO records, but you can be fairly sure when you find the right person. Family names are often a good clue.

Remenber the 1841 census is meant to round  ages down to the nearest 5 years, and that a name like Habbershon will have been written down in lots of different ways.
