But wait, there's more

The 1861 Census for James, with his 2nd wife Mary:
1861:
155 Dumbarton Rd, Partick, Govan, Lanarkshire
Parish 646/2, ED 23, pg 35, HS 207
Head: James CRAIG 46, Spout?? Merchant? ** b Greenock, Renfrewshire
Wife: Mary CRAIG 45,b Inchman, Renfrewshire
Son: William CRAIG 21, Ship Carpenter, b Kelmhaugh, Lanarkshire
Son: John CRAIG 17, Ship Smith?? (App), b Partick
Dau: Mary CRAIG 15, b Partick
Son: James CRAIG 9, Scholar, b Partick
Dau: Jessie CRAIG 7, Scholar, b Partick
Niece: Mary
BUCHMAN 21, Domestic Servant, b Partick
(** James' occupation is actually a bad transcript of "Spirit Merchant" (see following) - on earlier Census he was a Shipwright or similar, he still may have been in 1861 as well as dealing in Spirits as a "home'" business).
Noting the neice in 1861: transcribed as Mary BUCHMAN.
This is an 'odd' name and the immediate thought is that it's supposed to be BUCHANAN.
Which it is and she is probably a Niece to Mary (or could even be a daughter) - as follows:
IGI Marriage:
James CRAIG & Mary BUCHANAN
11 Aug 1854, Govan, Lanarkshire
James died in 1861 sometime between the Census and 31 December:
Scotlands People - WILLS section:
Inventory dated 31 Dec 1861 - Glasgow Sheriff Court Inventories
James CRAIG, Spirit Merchant residing at 155 Dumbarton Road in Partick near Glasgow.
Spouse of Mary BUCHANAN or CRAIG.
The 1854 marriage and 1861 Death and the Inventory can both be downloaded from Scotlands People.
But the marriage occurred before Civil registration - so it may not tell you much at all, and probably won't tell you anything about his parents. It may mention he was a widower but may not name the first wife.
So the death record is the one to get, hoping the informant (Mary?) knew the names of his parents! It may also mention the name of his first wife.
I think it will be this one:
James CRAIG age 45 - death registered Partick, Lanarkshire 1861
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.ukThis also tells us:
Christian MILLER, his first wife, died before Aug 1854.
Jessie CRAIG the daughter born about 1854, may be Mary's. But also possible Jessie was born some time in 1853 to Christina and James remarried within a year of Christina's death.
In any case. Christina's death is before Civil Registration.
Cheers
