William Jones, Cookley Farm, Cookley Green
« on: Friday 09 October 09 23:46 BST (UK) »
Hello,    I am researching Ernest Charles Jones, b 1880, Pishill.  In 1891 He lived at Darkwood Farm, Park Corner but moved with his family to Cookley Farm before 1901 and was still there 1911.
His family were: William, father,   Farmer
                          Emily (nee Churchill)  mother
                           Thomas William 1879
                            Emmie 1882
                            James Edward   1882
                             Hannah Mary    1884
                             Frederick          1887
                             Arthur               1886
                             William Edward J   1890
                              Rose Mary          1890
There is little known about this side of the family as Ernest married at 34 and appeared to be "distanced" from his family from that point.   He was a Coachman and several of his siblings worked in service, possibly on the Swyncombe House estate.  After the 1914/18 war he moved to the Cambridge area.     I am hoping to find links with anyone else researching this family - a long shot probably.      Does anyone know the Cookley Green area and where this family might be buried?      Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.   :)
Thanks.

Silly me - Cookley Green is in Oxfordshire, near Watlington and Swyncombe, in fact it may be part of Swyncombe.  Other area names in this research are Pishill, Russells Water and Park Corner, all close together.
Hope this helps.   Thanks for asking.

Anyone living in Cookley Green would probably attend the lovely old church at Swyncombe. Both the churches at Pishill and Nettlebed would be a longer walk. There are a number of Jones recorded in the transcripts of the parish records for Swyncombe, but predominantly of the previous generation.

There is burial for Frederick Jones of Park Corner aged 58 on January 29th, 1946. Unfortunately, I don't have access to burials in Nettlebed and Pishill for the same period. I can tell you that Rose Mary and James both married at Swyncombe church. It might also be worthwhile checking out the records for Ewelme where a number of Jones are recorded.

Hope this is of use.

Reg

The 1891 Census has Rose is not born yet..

1891 Census
RG12/1159/73/6
Darkwood Farm,
Park Corner, Oxfordshire

William JONES, 35
Emily..., 34
Thomas.W..., 11
Ernest.C..., 10
Emmie..., 9
James.E..., 8
Hannah.M..., 6
Arthur..., 4
Frederick..., 5
William.J.., 2

Is a brother Joseph Jones, age 37, living next door??

Interestingly on the 1881 William and Emily are married but Thomas does not appear with them ???
Ernest.C, son aged 10days or 10 weeks is there. Williams occp is stone caster.

Edit; deleted this bit as made mistake :-[

Do you have William in earlier Census/parents/parents marriage etc.
The more that is posted on here the more likely someone else who is descended from this family can find you ;)

Trish :)

Many thanks Reg and Trish for your interest in the Jones.
I have found pretty well of info through the census sheets on this Swyncombe family of farmers and am trying to find a definite link between Ernest Charles from Swyncombe and the Ernest Charles whom Sally, for whom I'm researching knows, to be her grandfather.   It seems once he married, there was little contact between him and his family.   We are 99.9% sure this is one and the same chap.   Sally would like to link up with cousins from Swyncombe in the hope that they can provide the missing bit of info which confirms the Ernests are one and the same.

Sally's Ernest married aged 34 to a London girl and eventually lived in Cambridge, but died at 47 years.
Sally's hoping that someone will be able to say "Ah yes, Charlie went off and never came back" or something of the sort.     His wife was pregnant when they married.

Incidentally, Trish, Thomas was staying with his Churchill grandparents in 1881.

Thanks again for your thoughts,     Betty

Best of luck Betty. I have seen some amazing results on Rootschat when out of the blue another descendant pops up.
