Hello everyone, I am sorry to come in on this chat so late in the game, several years after the last post in fact, but I'm glad I stumbled across it, as there is so much valuable information here! I just wanted to send a quick message to those in this thread, in case anyone is still interested in discussing the ALLEN family.

I am a Canadian descendant of James ALLEN (1861-1946) of Glenleary (son of Robert ALLEN and Elizabeth HENRY) and his wife Esther ALLEN (1861-1947) - they would be my 2nd great grandparents. I am currently trying to learn more about the ALLEN family in general - where exactly they came from, info about their siblings, parents, etc. Anything really, I have so many questions!

While I have been compiling information about the children of Robert ALLEN and Elizabeth HENRY (lots has been learned thanks to this thread) I am struggling a bit with James ALLEN's wife Esther ALLEN's family. I believe I found their marriage record from the Parish of Macosquin on 24 May 1887 - which states James as being from Glenleary (father Robert Allen) and Esther being from Camus (father John Allen).

Does anyone have any information on the family of Esther ALLEN (father John ALLEN) from Camus?

Hello to all Allan researchers! Yes there is still a lot of interest in the Allens though I don't think we have moved on that much. Some people have done DNA and surely that will help. I haven't enough skills in that line but others have

Esther Allen was the daughter of William Allen of Camus. The marriage lists her father as John Allen but this is an error (perhaps confusion with the witness John Allen). Her father William Allen died 7 April 1891 and his Will mentions daughter Easter (Esther).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thank you Aghadowey this sounds very plausible. I'll have to get back into the Allens to see if we can pull some or the story together

Unfortunately this is one family where DNA doesn't seem to have sorted things out too well.

Indeed so! Using the same Christian names in different permutations, using different shortened forms, changing names that were registered, not giving father's names,.... And those are just the record keeping glitches

Thank you Aghadowey! I am shocked, just that quick, I might actually have a chance at learning about Esther’s family. Looking at “John” as her father wasn’t getting me anywhere. I hope William brings me better luck! These misrecordings in records can really throw a person for a loop…. Like LindeL said, it also becomes tough when so many people have the same names.

Is there a specific site you guys can recommend for searching Irish records? I have primarily been using Irishgenealogy.ie

Also, when trying to look up some of these locations, I just want to make sure I’m on the right track. When I search Glenleary on Google Maps, Glenleary Farm House on Glenleary Rd comes up. Similarly, when I search Camus, Camus House and Graveyard come up. Are these landmarks in the right vicinity of where the ALLENs lived?
