No 7 Shoeshop Bethnal Green, Middlesex

Hi

I have a copy of the 1861 census for George Lawrence b 1829 Bishopsgate, and his address is 7 Shoeshop Bethnal Green.

It doesn't list the road of the shoe shop, (Perhaps Bethnal Green Road?) I know George was a shoe/boot manufacturer, so am thinking the shoe shop was his.

How can I find this out?   I have tried searching various directories but to no avail.  George did end up employing 15 men and 6 women but I think this was a family type thing, with members of his family doing the work.  As all his brothers and sons are listed as Cordwainers, boot clickers etc.

Any help would be appreciated

On one census index, the address is given as 7 Shoe Shop North Place Bethnal Green.

In 1871 they were at Cambridge Road (later Cambridge Heath Road, I believe).

I have an old map,  I have traced this branch of my family a fair way back but want to add some meat to all the names I have

George Lawrence appears in the 1856 Post Office directory for London:

George Lawrence, Boot & Shoe maker, 7 Cambridge Road, Mile End

Have been looking for information on this branch as it seems George and his Sons were Boot & Shoe Manufacturers.  I think they must have been the most successful as one of George's brothers children (3 sons ) are in the workhouse in 1900.

I do know however, that Shoe making was common back then and as most of his brothers and Sons continued to be in the shoe making industry one way or another.  I was hoping that as George seemed to have his own business that I could find out quite a bit, shame our ancestors didn't realise that we would want lots of information lol

Hi Sarah,  have just found this site and was very interested in your post.  George Lawrence was my grandfatherx3 and the shop was in Cambridge road now Cambridge Heath Road.  My cousin is the family history expert and kindly passes what she has discovered on to me.  Would be pleased to hear from you.  Kind regards Brianna
