McDONALD 1841
« on: Tuesday 06 October 09 23:17 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I'm looking for John McDonald and wife Mary nee Johnston, children- Mary born 1809, John 1812, William 1814 and Jane(t) 1817. Not sure if John Snr and wife Mary were born Scotland (poss. 1 or both born Ireland) however the 4 children were born in the Parish of Penninghame, Wigtownshire.

The family were definitely living in Penninghame in the late 1830's and there seems to be a connection to Minnigaff, KKD also.

Appreciate any help.

Regards,

Re: Allison Family

also residents of Barskeoch Farm, Samuel Allison and his family were workers on this farm, he would be my Great Great Great grandfather, I have a photo of the cottage on the farm taken in 2002. I also have birthdates  and details of the family members if you are wanting them. My great grandfather was the youngest of this family called David Burnie Allison after one of the owners of the farm and he sailed to New Zealand on the ship "Bombay" arriving 1865

 Regards Maria

sealbh, do you have any idea what your John McDonald did for a living? I'm not finding an obvious candidate in the 1841 census. In fact, I can't see any John McDonald's in Wigtownshire, a few in Ayrshire though.

Hi Maria....I would be interested in the photograph definitely. I have seen mention of your Samuel Al(l)ison on a document that states in winter of 1835 & 1836, he was in charge of the barn at Barskeoch Farm. He must have been employed by the Burnie family and David Burnie who was a Doctor is where your great grandfather got his name as you said. I don't think any of the Burnie siblings married, could be wrong though.

Best wishes,

Hi K44ENF,

The McDonald's were living at Causewayend, Penninghame in the mid to late 1830's at least. I guess John McDonald was probably a farmer but don't know for sure. I have proof they were living there until 1839 but they vanish after that. A grand daughter appears in Minnigaff, KKD in 1851 as a servant but where the family went to prior to that I don't know. My only thought is they may have gone to Ireland and probably the closest county to Wigtownshire, SCT. I think there is an 1841 census for Ireland which may be the only hope. Other than that, they may still be in Scotland and are just hard to find.

Thanks for your interest.

Hi sealbh

There is a marriage for a Mary McDonald to James McHendry in Penninghame 1835. Have you checked to see if this could be the eldest child?

I'm sorry, I am not seeing them in 1841 at all. Certainly not in Wigtownshire, but not anywhere else either. The details just don't tie up in the ones I have looked at.

Sorry!

Hi Kirsty,

Thanks for reminding me of that marriage and also there is one the same year for a John McDonald to Isabella Menzies. I'll look further to confirm their parents which I guess will be stated on the death certificates. Still looking for brother William and sister Jane(t) McDonald.

Many thanks,

Hi Karen,

There is a John and Mary McDonald residing in Minnigaff, KKD, on the 1841 census. Both are born in Ireland which is what I have always suspected. Their ages certainly fit. If this is them and the marriages of Mary and brother John are correct, it leaves William and Jane still unaccounted for.

Thanks alot for your help.
