...In 1881 Elizabeth would have been 16 and I believe she was born in Ayrshire.
Her parents are listed as either William and Elizabeth Shaw or William and Marian Shaw nee Nisbet.
On Elizabeths marriage certificate it states her mother was Elizabeth but on the poor application it states she was Marian
I am afraid that I can't tell you anymore about the family only that Marian/Elizabeth was dead by the time of Elizabeths marriage in 1890
...Janie
Hi Janie
Further to my last PM asking for William' s occupation & witness' to the marriage, I
think I may have found Elizabeth in 1881:
IGI: Has William SHAW married to Marion NISBET as follows:
26 NOV 1843 Shotts, Lanark, Scotland (Nesbet)
24 DEC 1843 Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland (Nisbet)
These 2 dates will refer to the same event, as banns would have been called in 2 parishes - his and hers, probably.
IGI has issue of William SHAW and Marion NISBET as follows:
1 AGNES SHAW Birth: 16 JUN 1855 Bothwell, Lanark
2 JOHN SHAW Birth: 11 MAY 1858 Bothwell, Lanark
3 JANE SHAW Birth: 10 MAY 1861 Bothwell, Lanark
4 ELIZABETH SHAW Birth: 23 JUN 1864 Bothwell, Lanark
There's probably more children, but the ones here are all from the time civil rego began in 1855 - and I'm sure you'll recognise it as a stroke of great fortune that Agnes was born in 1855 - her cert (if this turns out to be your family) should tell you what the they had for breakfast the day she was born
Follows is, I believe, the Elizabeth SHAW as born to William SHAW & Marion NISBET; in C81:
Boness Road, Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203617 GRO Ref Volume 625-2 EnumDist 12 Page 11Head: William SHAW, Widower, age 58 born Airdrie, Lanark; Iron Miner
Dau: Jane SHAW, unmarr, age 19 born Chapelhall, Lanark; Housekeeper
Dau: Eliza SHAW, Unmarr, age 16 born Chapelhall, Lanark ;
[no occ. stated) Strongly feel this could be your family - if I remember rightly in another of your posts, was there not another link to Lanark, ? Not sure how you've come to believe she was born in Ayr, so perhaps your information will put the kybosh on my theorising
Also, Chaplehall is in Airdrie, and I think perhaps Bothwell might be the RD that includes Chaplehall? Not sure on that - someone else may know.
Will restrain myself from further idea-ring, until you say what you think so far - I just hope William was an Iron Miner on her marriage cert.
Cheers
Anne
