Where should I look?

My ancestors (Australian) marriage cert. has his birthplace as 'Cape of Good Hope' in 1829 and being a seaman. His father Charles an 'innkeeper'.

His surname is Everest and my question is:  Would I be right in assuming 'Everest is an English surname and more likely to have travelled to south africa.   And: if so; where would be the best place to start researching immigration etc.  also, if the name 'everest' is more prevalent in certain places. (i noticed Kent is popular but I know very little about Englands geography).

There are some big 'Everest' families around that crop up everywhere I search, but just cant find mine.   Hoping anyone can give me a bit of direction.  Thankyou kindly, Caralyn

I don't think anything can be assumed with so little to go on, unfortunately.
A look on the IGI does indicate has high probability of his being English in origin - Sussex also features heavily as a county.

The family may have been English, but who knows how long they might have been in South Africa or how and from where they came to that place.

The father Charles, may have been a seaman (Navy), or Army  himself at the time, with his family with him and your man could've been born on a ship in or near Cape of Good Hope at the time.  "Innkeeper" does sound "English" though.

Your ancestor - Mr ......... Everest (can we know his first name  )
Do you know how and when he arrived in Australia and from where?
Does his death records have any further information on it regarding parents.

Frederick William EVEREST B. 1829 Cape of Good Hope
Spouse: Margaret McNulty B. 1836 Galway Ireland Married in Australia) 1855
Father: Charles Everest (innkeeper)
Mother: Mary Barry
Children: Frederick William, Edward William, Thomas Augustus, Albert John, Florence.

Frederick came to australia before 1855.
On his marriage cert. he has written (i think) seaman and his sons death cert. says Frederick was a cook.

Have you looked at immigrations?
Cape of Good Hope is on the migration route between Britain and Australia and was a British outpost. There was an embassy there and many migrant BMDs were registered there when they took place on the voyage.
I have no idea where those registrations are now, if I did it would solve a couple of my brick-walls.

Ancestry has an interesting marriage

At St Mary at Lambeth, 3rd May 1829, Frederick Charles EVEREST and Mary PARRY. Unfortunately the image has no further information.  Given the date, maybe his father possibly being known by his middle name and the similarity of Marys surname, could this be the parents of Frederick William EVEREST. If so then it could be he was born enroute to Australia.

Thank you all very much for your time.  Yes he is Frederick William.  I also saw that Mary Parry etc. listed in the LDS and had the same thought but couldnt think where to do some double checking.  I hadnt thought that he could have been born on the way.  Maybe I should be searching his fathers records.  Having some new avenues to check is great.  Thanks.
