Wood & Brown families of Dumbarton
« on: Monday 05 October 09 05:25 BST (UK) »
I am hoping some kind sole might be able to help me in discovering information for my son in law and his family.
Thomas Wood wh was a ship joiner born Brewery Lane Dumbarton 6 Feb 1854 and believed to be the son of John Wood and Janet McIlquham.
Thomas was educated Dumbarton Academy and in 1869 apprenticed to Scott and Linton.
I think he may have married Margaret Brown and they had at least three children. He may have had a link with "Cutty Sark" which I think was launched in 1869.
When Scott and Linton ceased operations he was one of a number of apprentices transferred to Leven Shipyard.
In the 80s he made several trips to New Zealand on the "Arawa".
Any assistance or guidance greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Thomas Wood was my Great Grandfather.  Your facts on Tom are all correct. I have a little more that I can pass on if you would like.
regards
David.

Good morning David.I would very much appreciate any additional information you may be able to give me.
I believe Thomas Wood was born 6 Feb 1854 to John Wood and Janet (McIlquham).
Thomas may have married Margaret Brown.
I think Thomas was educated at Dumbarton Academy.

Where do you live please?
With thanks.
Rex

Hi Rex,
I have attached an extract about Tom from a book that was passed to me from my Grandfather Charles, also a photograph from the book. It looks like from your facts that you may already have seen this as there are a lot of similarities.
Tom was Married to Margaret Brown, Toms Mother was indeed Janet McIlquham, His Father John. Toms Grandfather was William Wood a farmer from Drymen and his Grandmother Elisabeth Risk.
I live just outside Glasgow. Is your Son-in-law any relation to Tom ?
regards
David.

Hello again David.
Nice to meet you.
In your latest you mentioned that you had attached an extract about Tom.
I don't think this has come through.
I will send you a Pers. Message which will give you my email address.
My son in law is definitely related to Tom. His mother is Edna.
Regards
Rex

Hello again David.Where does your grandfather Charles fit in ?
If you need details of the family in Australia,I can provide details.
Edna (Wood) is married to Allen Morris.Son Peter is a TV reporter in Australia.
Tom made several trips to New Zealand on the "Arawa".
I am relying on second hand information,so interested to know details from the book.

With thanks

Hi David
By chance do you have any knowledge of George Houston of Dumbarton who married Mary Taylor?
They were the parents of Charlotte McAusland Houston who married Tom Wood.
I hope I am not mixing up the generations.

With thanks
